Quote:Hmm i never thought of that... so mpeg-2 playback from atsc would require more processing power than a mpeg-2 file created with say PVR150?
Correct.

Quote:But I notice that for the ATI HDTV WOnder for instance, the mininum system requirement is a 1.3ghz processor whereas this thing requires 2.2ghz-2.8ghz or 1.8 centrino.
I think the "2.2ghz-2.8ghz or 1.8 centrino" bit is more realistic for playback of any HDTV content. I cant imagine a 1.3GHz processor coping. By "minimum system requirement" they might have been referring to the CPU required to play standard definition ATSC content.

I see! Okay thanks, I guess it's time for me to upgrade my computer. Hopefully a good Dell deal will come along soon.

Thanks Smile

You guys were right! (Not that I thought for a minute you guys would be wrong.) I made a recording with my slow computer and tried playback of the . dvr-ms file on just windows media player and it was choppy. Copied the file to a computer with a faster processor and playback was a lot smoother but there were these occassional jagged/tears to the image.

Thanks Smile

Hello Jslane or any helpers,

I am new to GB-PVR. I just bought the ATI TV Wonder 650. I don't know how to config the ATI 650 on GB-PVR. I go to "Tuning Settings" and “GB-PVR Configuration”; I do not see the ATI 650 listed under "Card Type" or any where. Are there any steps I need to perform before I go to do the tuning? How do I config the software to recognize my ATI 650.

Thanks.

How do I config the ATI TV Wonder 650? I don't see this card listed under "Tuning Settings" or in "GB-PVR Configuration". What choice should I pick under "Card Type" in "Tuning Settings" utility?

Can you help me by provide step by step how to make this card work. I only need to make the HD side to work, I do not need the analog signal. Can someone also provide step by step how to set up the EPG.

Thank you very much in advance for all the helps.

pht58,

I no longer have my 650 installed, but from memory it is basically this:

Start GB-PVR Configuration.
In Capture Sources (tab at the top), select the "Add" button, and for the Recording Source, select "BDA Recording plugin". In the Settings button, for the Device Type, select the ATI 650 (ATSC). It should show up in the list if the drivers are installed.
Then, for the EPG source, select "DVB EPG Broadcast". At the bottom, click on "Update EPG".

That should get you started, and you will need to go from there. I don't see anything marked "Tuning Settings" by the way. Is that in GB-PVR?

The first thing you need to verify is that the drivers for the card got installed. When you don't install the full raft of ATI software (Catalyst, etc.), the drivers may not get installed (even though you ran the driver install). I had to run the driver install a second time to get my 550 to show up.

Check in Windows Device Manager under the "Sound, Video and Game controllers" section that you have an entry called "ATI Unified AVStream Driver".

Thank you very much for your help. I got it to work now. For the EPG, I could not get "DVB EPG Broadcast" to work. So, I selected "Zap2It" and it works fine now.
Thanks again for all of the helps.

Out of curiosity, what kind of file sizes are you guys getting when you record a 1 hr show with HDTV?

I have to clear more HD space but i find my files are 3.3gigs for 30 mins of recording!

Anyway to reduce this?

Edit: Just want to add I will try transcoding. Smile

I'm considering a ATI 650 so this thread is great, thanks to all. I'm comparing to a Hauppauge HVR 1600 so does anyone know how these two compare?

congenictv, I think that is the tradeoff with hdtv as I understand it. Isn't video already encoded but the files sizes are way larger than when using analog cards and recordings.
