Thanks for everyones help - I think Outlook 2003 is sending my netbios name as the FQDN (which obviously can't be qualified over the internet)
I was hoping there would be a setting / registry tweak which I could set the HELO / EHLO FQDN being sent to somehting other than that.
If I use an actual web address (any) then the mailserver responds with Hello {IP ADDRESS}.cable.telstraclear.co.nz (using telnet)
I guess for security reasons and to stop spammers that you cant set your own FQDN? (in Outlook / Thuderbird) - I'll just forward all of my mail to to new address for a while.
