Just an update. gEd was right and the graphics card was overheating. Found that the fan on the video card died.

the law of averages dictates that it was bound to happen eventually....

glad you got it sorted. not sure how you replace the fan on a 6600, aren;t they built into the cooler?

mine needs replacing on my 6800 makes bad noises but at least i know its still going
im just going to cable tie a bigger one on the side when it dies lucky i have room
but yeah gpu fans always shit themselves or at least get noisey

you'll need to take the cowl off the heatsink if you want to strap on a regular fan. the standard fan is a blower type that blows air across the gpu and memory heatsinks. (well that's what the one on my 6800 ultra was like).

I'd be concerned that strapping on a regular fan might not cool it properly.

My card went bang the other week (well a capacitor fell off) which was a complete PITA. I am planning to break the machine and sell the components and the 6800 was the most valuable part of the pc.

thats what the heat sink is for to move the heat then the fan cools that if it goes bang then it was meant to be
mines just a normal fan with heat sink around it if that makes sense
i may even extend my water cooled cpu cooler home made 2 years ago and still going havent touched it since i did it cpu used to run at stupid temps nows it stays at 30degC no matter what you throw at it
