ZA is probably not good at monitoring activity in other desktop sessions. Try deleting the PVRX2.exe rules in ZA, then go to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services, and set the GBPVR Recording Services to 'allow service to interact with desktop'.

I will double check but I set that yesterday on Martin's suggestion.

Would the order matter? i.e. having it out of ZA before checking the box for interacting with the desktop?

I dont know. I dont use ZA. It might not be asking you for permission for the networking activity that is occurring on the secondary desktop session that the MVP servers run on. It might just be disallowing by default rather than popping up a box to ask for permission.

Oh well, after the next attack/infestation I'll probably have to start from scratch. It probably needs a fresh XP install anyhow.

Cheers

ApexHack Wrote:Thanks to everyone trying to help dumbshit me.

It was the firewall afterall. If I shut it down completely then the MVP will connect.

I have to admit befuddlement though because nothing I now do will allow the MVP to connect with ZA running. I tried deleting PVRX2 from the list then starting the MVP which pops up an allow/deny window which I said allow & remember, but that didn't do it. It was configured like before when everything was working peachy so WTF?

I even restarted the computer/server and this time when trying to power up the MVP it went through some config stuff with a blue box in the middle but ended up saying that it could not find any server. The computer had no messages from ZA saying it was trying to connect. I then shut off ZA and after some more power off/power on cycles the MVP went back through the routine of checking connectivity, loading bootserver, and yeehaw finally loading application and woohoo the menu.

Nothing has changed with the box except for the install of 1.2.9 so I don't see how it could be on my end. Something must've changed with PVRX2 or something.

This is not a real good situation to be in because now I'm vulnerable again. The MVP/GB-PVR have become very much relied upon these days, however sad that may be, and they have priority.

If anyone knows what I might be doing wrong with ZA or whatever please let me know. Or maybe another free firewall that works with 1.2.9?

Or with the other dongle do any better maybe? I should try that but now I don't want to touch it since it's working.

Thanks again everybody.
Cheers

First are you using a router. If you are, you're not vulnerable. Routers inherently act as Firewalls.

If you don't, get one. They're cheap.

ZA is something I stopped using when XP came out and I used the XP FW and a router combination.

But ZA needs to allow not just PVRX2 but also GBPVR Recording service.

If you dead set on using ZA then here's an idea. Clear all entries in the allow list, and restart the computer. Assuming your computer is clean, allow every box that comes up. All of them - assuming your box is clean (have I said that?)

The culprit should be among the programs that come up asking for permission, and you should have your MVP up then...

Just a thought... probably need to delete all your entries that allow the GBPVR stuff in ZA and allow it either to redetect these actions or add them back in.

Reason I say this is because of my experience just using XP's built in firewall and other things. For example, after every upgrade of GBPVR, the firewall starts ignoring/block my entries for GBPVR and any shortcuts I have made on the desktop for launching GBPVR related stuff no longer function (this isn't isolated to just my dedicated PVR, this happens on my office machine as well). So I have to recreate the shortcuts and remove all the GBPVR exceptions in the firewall, reboot, and re-add them.
