All my SD QAM channel are 528x480 and identified that way in TSReader. When expanded to 4:3 that is 704x480 which sounds right to me.

Yes, it was Eyewitness News.

If that is the case regarding resolution, then why does it play back so right in WinTV and so wrong in PVRX2?

This time I recorded some college basketball in WinTV and it shows 1920x1080i (but is nearly unwatchable in PVRX2 vs. VLC). Same show in PVRX2 comes out 528x480 and is not that smooth.

Lost, recorded via the Hauppauge recording program (so lame!) comes out 720p and plays back ok in PVRX2.

btw, I switched to dvr-ms and ATI and the both come out low-res and 4:3 aspect.

Obviously, the QAM signal is not low-res or I wouldn't be able to record it that way.

Also, I am using 512mg of my 2gb of ram for video.

I'm guessing there is a standard definition version of the channel carried on your digital cable, as well as a high def one, and you've mapped to the standard definiton version.

I will check again, in WinTV there are clearly DTV and HDTV stations, for some reason it is less obvious in PVRX2. However I always have selected the higher numbers as it is that way in WinTV.

I will try it the other way and see what happens, regardless would DTV be less resolution than normal cable?

It can be. Its up to the broadcaster to decide what resolution and bit rate they'll use.
