AVIVO would probably appear under your ATI video card's settings

gEd Wrote:sorry - I lied. It is set at 1024x768. I broke my long held rule of maintaining the vertical res at 576. However at the lower res, I can't access the avivo video settings such as edge enhancement. looks fantastic to me on my 100hz pany crt.
What refresh rate and interlace settings are you using?

Been reading around and I'm just wondering if I could impove my playback quality buy adjusting the settings.

gEd could you give us more details on you set up.

My TVs best resolution is 1024 by 768.

I have DVB-T and DVB-S inputs.

Setting my graphics card to 720x576 50hz gives a less crisp picture but smooth playback of DVB-T and DVB-S.

However this means HD donesn't look like HD.

If I set the graphics card to 1024x768 50hz then the HD plays fine and looks great but the 720x576 transmissions (both DVB-T and DVB-S) stuttter.

So I have to keep changing the graphics card settings manually which isn't ideal. Am i doing anything wrong?

here are my settings.

1024x768 32-bit 25hz
flicker removal off
s-video sharpness standard
no overscan

3d settings (I'm not sure they are relevant)
A-aliasing: use app settings
a-filtering: app settings
catalyst AI enabled
mipmap slider on quality
wait for refresh: off unlesss app specifies
adaptive a-aliasing: off

avivo settings (very relevant)
colour vibrance: enabled (28)
flesh tone correction: off
use auto-delinterlacing: on
pulldown detection: off
edge-enhancement: ON (29) (works well)
de-noise off (may help with noisly analogue signals but made my image too blurry)
enable dynamix contrast: on

decoder:
Cyberlink PDVD8
settings: Use dxVA enabled
force weave

This is on a Panasonic 100Hz widescreen CRT TV (£100 off ebay 2 years ago)

Good quality (£30) IXOS S-video --> SCART cable from 4670 graphics card to TV.

At 720x576 I wasn;t able to play with the avivo settings such as edge-enhance and I got really bad tearing on panning shots. So even though I have historically advocated setting res. to 720x576, I was forced to change and I am very happy with the picture quality.

I am however starting to look at the new 37" Panasonic LCD screens as I want to get Freesat and HD video. Then I will have to deal with 1080p/deninterlacing and all that hassle.

Bathman:
If HD plays fine then your system is fundamentally up to the job.

Maybe gbpvr is using different codecs for SD and HD(freesat?) recordings and your SD codec is trying to upscale the image and struggling.

Have you perhaps been tweaking ffdshow as per the guide on avforms to get it to upscale the image?

the log will tell you which decoder you are using. If it is ffdshow, try and switch to PDVD7 or try another decoder such as MPV.

Thanks gEd, appreciate that post, lots of typing.

Will be trying some of those settings out later. Also, what Video Renderer do you use?

you're most welcome.

Btw: My source is dvb-t freeview and I use the EVR renderer on vista (sorry I should have mentioned that)

The 25hz part I find interesting. My only choice at 720x576 is 60hz, changing to 60-80hz at higher resolutions. I thought UK TVs (older ones anyway) are 50hz!?

Also, did you know what all these settings mean (edge enhance, interlace weave etc) or was it just trial and error?

what via an s-video connection? 80Hz could damage an s-video input AFAIK.

yes UK is 50Hz hence the 25Hz that mine shows ( 2 x as it is interlaced)

edge enhance increased the contract on the edges of images to improve perceived sharpness.

weave interlace means output an interlaced signal - which is what you want on a CRT display.

[edit]: Under Catalyst "TV Properties" have you set the correct country?
