Analog Captions (VBI) don't work with HVR-2250 [North America]

So there's not a whole lot that can be done without creating a separate plugin, along with extensive coding knowledge (which I don't have). Do you know if any other PVR that would support the captions? I'd much prefer NextPVR due to the intuitive interface and most importantly, the cost, but captions are seriously a dealbreaker for me, and I'd be willing to pay a bit extra to have something that supports them. WinTV isn't very good with the scheduling for recordings, and doesn't really have a great 10 foot ui, and it seems that Media Center only finds about 10 channels, and ignores all the other ones that don't have EPG readily available.

I think Media Center is probably the only one that would give closed captions with this device - though I don't know for sure,

Why did Hauppauge decide to make captions so difficult to capture? :'(

At the end of the day Hauppauge build products around whatever video encoder chipsets are being peddled by the suppliers at the time, and this one didn't support closed caption encoding. Most people don't care about closed captions, so it's probably not a big deal for them - any they still get to have a tick in the 'closed captions' box since WinTV has it's proprietary method for handling closed captions on devices that cant do them natively. It's only a problem when you want to use closed captions in a 3rd party app.

sub If I did add this to NetworkRecorder via wintv7rec or the maybe even used the wintv7 sdk would the cc's be parsed ok and then playable with Mainconcept?

No, when you playback the recordings it wouldn't see the closed captions, since they wouldn't be in the standard place in the MPEG2 stream.

What if there was a script to run ccextract on the .ts file with the --hauppauge flag? NextPVR can use SRT files, right? Something like postprocessing.bat?

Yes, NextPVR can used SRT files. That'll only work with .ts files recorded in WinTV though. The native video output produced by this device (and recorded by NextPVR) doesn't include any closed captions.

Wasn't mvallevand's solution to record using WinTV's recorder and pass the TS files to NextPVR? I know it's a bit of a convoluted solution, but that should work, right?
