Computers are even more complicated than I thought ... Disabling jumbo frames fixed NextPVR but I still had problems doing backups to the NAS. Everything was eventually fixed by replacing the network cable to the NAS. The cable supplied with the NAS was Naff. After changing the cable, everything worked okay with jumbo frames except that data transfers were slower with jumbo frames than with the default frame size. The NAS, the PC network adapters and the switch have explicit support for jumbo frames. A week ago, I didn't know that jumbo frames existed so I won't miss them.
The thing that caught me out ... I checked the source and destination file sizes every time that a NextPVR archive failed and the file sizes were the same so I thought that the data copy had finished and that the process failed at about the time that it tried to delete the source file to complete the move. That was too simple ... the move process begins by creating an empty destination file with the same size as the source file and them fills the destination file with data.
If the cable had been less dodgy and I had left all settings at the defaults ... I would have had no problems and everything would have worked "out of the box". Thanks for your thoughts.
