I've had issues in the past with the Indexing Service holding locks on files. This service is enabled by default, but it used very little. Try stopping it and see if it helps your delete issue. I've had anti-virus software cause issues like this too, so make sure you are excluding your recordings folder if you use any.

Further, to really make sure you can delete a file, try it from a command prompt, or do Shift-Delete from Windows Explorer. A simple Delete is actually a rename (to the recycled folder) and Windows 2000/XP/2003 will all allow an open file to be renamed without affecting currently open handles.

I appreciate it, but indexing is off, no AV installed, and shift-del won't work because it's considered busy.

It's just one of those things, so far. I'm sure it's something on the system that sets it up, but what I can't figure is why the delete from GB isn't deleting the same way the system delete is.

Not being able to delete avi is a common XP problem.

reven Wrote:it could be windows xp (assuming you use xp), i have one file, its a divx file, that windows never lets me delete, or rename or do anything with it. no program is using it, even if i try deleting it in the command prompt windows wont let me, win xp is annoying this way (its a major bug). i was only able to delete the file in safe mode.

Another option in the future is to use SysInternals or OH from the Resource Kit to see what process has the file locked.

Good one capone. Microsoft seems like the usually "want" to help with stuff like this, but sometimes they get in the way of themselves...

Revisit: I can't confirm for sure, but it looks like blaming Index may have been it.

I had it shut off, which is why I slammed the idea. But, it had made indexs for D and network drives: where the problem was happening.

I deleted the indexes, and it's been fine since. I'll call this closed unless it happens again.

Thx mucho for the suggestion.
