OK. Looking into services that are running when the error occurs (i.e. every 2nd start, with the information and config windows) the Service
"GBPVRRecordingService.exe" never actually stops, it just gets stuck on "Stopping". A restart of config appears to stop and restart it normally, allowing it to complete with no advserse effects.

Googling a bit for this continual "Stopping" of services, one fellow says "SCM (Servcie Control manager) has a hard coded limit of 30 seconds for any service to shutdown"

So I tried to stop the service manually and got an "Error 1053", which is a "not stopping in a timely fashion" error.

Googling again, "When your service starts, it has to update its status to "started" (or "starting" with a progress indicator), otherwise it service control manager (SCM) won't know when it is successfully started. How to do this is more complicated than I should go into here. You should just use a nice wrapper class that does all of that for you. This one looks good: http://www.codeproject.com/system/xservice.asp "
  • I tried logging on as an account rather than Local User =>NG
  • I tried changing options to restart on failurte in the recovery tab =>NG
Maybe it's time for a WinXP reinstall? Bummer, it's my main PC and a lot of progs need to go in... Grrrrr....

I know what you mean. I had my share lately, but it's running fine now (and I don't exactly know why), so now I hardly dare to touch it for experimenting:o . I know that feeling will wear.Big Grin

sub,

I don't know if this helps you with diagnosis or not but the locked up Information Window "Not Responding" works perfectly, responds, and GBPVR restarts as it should if I alt-tab, activate and manually close the Small DOS Window labelled "GB-PVR MediaMVP Server".

just curious: how come you have a little gbpr-mvp-server winindow when you alt-tab? I don't see it on my system. Do you run the rec-service under a user-account or under local-system?

You don't have one when you alt-tab? Just double checked ... yup, it's under local-system. And yes, I have 1 Server auto start in Config. (I do not use the GBPVR MVP Media Server from the Program File menu... I used to but took it out of Start ... does anyone actually use that these days...??? )

Just me in my development/testing. I wouldnt expect anyone else to use it that way.

Does unchecking the 'interact with desktop' setting help with your problem?

Nope, exactly same "lockup" symptoms I have come to know and love. :p ... and on top of that unchecking 'interact with desktop' also takes away my beloved MVP Tray Icon. Better not spend any more time on this, either you or me sub, it's a once-off. When I get back from leave, I'll probably do a zehd and reinstall WinXP and GBPVR.

Sometimes you have to give up:o , I did the same and re-installrd xp a while ago, I'm very happy now. I didn't have big problems but just the knowledge that they are there is annoying:mad: . I had unpredictable gbpvr-rec-service lockups caused by EWA. Haven't had one sinceBig Grin .
Good luck JK. I hope you do better with the xp-install than I did, I had my driveletters all mixed up, took me a few hours to get that sorted.
