How/Where can we find out whether a specific router supports streaming media well? I own a Zyxel Prestige 334

We quite frequently have hickups and restarts of the MVP in 90% of the cases while changing from one channel to the next, or going back to the menu. It is hard to reproduce, and I do not see funny things in the logs. My GBPVR server is 20meters(cable) away from the router. The MVP is about 70 meters(cable) (passing two Linksys switches) away from the router.

Well the US of A is not the only place where one can buy high quality stuff...
From your reponse I gather that what you say is based on personal experience with a couple of routers? From your earlier response I thought there was some place where I could check the quality of my router w.r.t. streaming media. Apology for my misinterpretation.

@ Pz1: You could try to get a long network cable, just to bypass your sitches as a test. 70 mtrs is quite long (+ 2 switches). You must have checked for the cables (not) being parallel to 220v-cables. And you probably did make the cables yourself, did you use the right pairing in the cables? Probably things you already did.Smile

my mvp is a h3 revision - will this help ?

also im using a netgear wgr614 wireless router - but my mvp is wired straight to it with only a 5m cat 6 network cable - i made it myself - and ensured that my pairing etc was all correct - the first time i thought arh who cares as long as its the same both ends - but my pc i put here first wouldnt connect to the network even though there was a link light - so i made sure that i made the change to the correct pairing.

When you hard reboot your mvp by undoing the power, do you get one of these log entries?

VERBOSE [6] Received MVP TFTP request: dongle.bin.ver

Have you all tried running the MVP Server that comes with GBPVR...

Tipstir, I don't think one can make a general recommendations on wireless routers like that. I've got an E1M running off one just fine. Overall the quality of consumer grade routers seems to be decreasing, but I don't think that the wifi ones are any worse.

The basic problem that I know of with routers is really in the switch because some can't handle the fact that the Hauppauge dongle flips from full duplex to half duplex.

Spyder - and everyone else that has the issues ive had - i grabbed the Dongle from this version the spyder mentioned and so far everything is working ok - touch wood.... been a couple of days and i think the wife is happy and i havent noticed my mvp reboot either - so im putting it down to that.

Sub not sure if you want to put this version into your next release or maybe as a extra dongle that people can choose from ?

cheers for everyones help
