MEncoder can encode straight from the disc with something like: -dvd-device j: dvd://1 -alang en

Something like -vf scale=720:480,expand=720:480 will add the bars to watch on a 4:3 tv. (I don't know if that's everything or not.)

I'm no expert. I've gotten a few of the kids' DVDs backed up to mpg so they can watch whenever on the MVP, but sometimes I have problems. I've done it pretty rarely. However, the MEncoder manual isn't too bad, and knowing the parameters to look up will help.

mage_tiko Wrote:ZProcess is a nice piece of work. But, the last time I tried it out, it had some issues dealing with the aspect ratio. *sigh* The MVP is sweet, but why on earth does it zoom 16:9 stuff??

I found this blurb on the ZProcess Wiki page (http://gbpvr.com/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Utility/ZProcess):

"I have used ZProcess with a Movie DVD recently but it was a little weird because ZProcess wasn’t handling the Aspect ratios correctly. The movie’s VOBs were letterbox inside 720x480, with the 16x9 bit set. ZProcess can’t deal with that right now.

For regular DVD movie to MPG (or AVI) I suggest still using your regular techniques."

Yeah basically that means, I wouldn't use it Transcode DVDs. I only interjected this idea because I thought you were talking about 16:9 inside 4x3, and that's what ZProcess does well. As in downloaded wide screen AVIs and then transcoded onthe fly with ZProcess to MPG. I did not want to steal the thread...

Steve.

Are you able to get subtitle in the MPEG this way? - so that you see the subtitle via MVP?
Using DELL P4 1.5GB RAM 250 GB HD + DLINK DNS313 netdisk 1,5TB, 2 pieces of Hauppauge PVR150 w/45-button remote, 1 Popcorn Hour 110. Win XP SP3. GB-PVR v1.4.7 Plugins: Xrecord

Just an update

What would be great is the DVD2MPEG plugin, but be able to point it at a file on disc.

I'm like the idea of a command line Mencode / Mplay / FFmpeg or such like to do the convert ac3 audio to mpeg, and make the single mpeg stream that the MVP wants.

On the other topic of on / off topic, I'm keen to keep this specific to GBPVR and the MVp, as that is what I want to use, to play stored DVD's from the hard disc to 4 MVP's.

I agree. Problem is many of the tools you need to do it are being hunted down and projects stopped. To view DVDs on the MVP you need to be able to rip the data from the DVD and encode it. As a result of piracy the industry dosent want you to be able to do that, fair use or not. Your other option is to get Hauppauge to allow the MVP to read DVDs and I don't think we'll get much joy there eitherSad

Never tried it with subtitles, sorry. But if you can find a tool to create an MPG from the DVD with the subtitles 'hard-coded' into the video, then the rest of my method should still work.

I'm quite sure that can be done e.g. with avisynth, but that's a "challenging" way to go. I've used avisynth for some uncomplicated transcoding stuff, works really great. It's possibilities are enormous and so is the studying (in my opinion)

Edit: you might check out http://www.videohelp.com , there you can find an awful lot of guides and tools for things like this.
AMD Athlon 64 3000, HDD: 80, 120, 200 GB, Hauppauge 350 + 150, MVP, Asus 6000L Laptop client, Asus X50sl client,
Fritz!box 7140 modem/router, GBPVR 1.3.7.
