It's fairly straightforward to me. Not everyone has the spare copy of Win7 and a IR remote receiver usually needed to make a modern HTPC and those alone cost more than an NMT.

For me the real advantage is that it takes too much patience to install all the codecs and decoders needed to consistentyl play 23.97/24/25/29.97/50/60 fps jutter free and get all the audio formats (MPEG, AC3, DTS, AAC, HE-AAC) working correct. I bought an ION hoping it would be easier but my NMT plays video better. Where the NMT is most lacking is with video that needs H/W acceleration and the ION has that limitation too.

Oddly enough, I found the whole codec/filter dealio to be the most interesting part of this project. Major celebration once I understood hwe accel, and how it finally allowed my crappy CPU to run my system. Didn't know anything about it before starting out, but in the end was weirdly simple.

I have about $100 invested in 4 MVP's at various TV's around the house. They're fed from an ancient server made up of parts that were mostly free. Smile The wife and kids and I don't always want to watch the same stuff...
i3-3570k, 8GB RAM, Win10 Pro, Nvidia GT710, HDHomeRun (OTA), NPVR 6.x

Hello, I am a current SageTV user exploring other alternatives now that SageTV is sold. I put off buying a few HD300 extenders so I, missed my chance, I have some of the older HD100 and HD 200 extenders but the HD100s are really slow with the nicer graphics heavy user interface. I saw nPVR suggested as a possible replacement on the SageTV forum so I thought I woud give it a try on a spare computer.

As for why anyone would want a hardware extender, the SageTV HD extenders are silent and use less than 10 watts while duplicating the SageTV user interface, also I didn't have to buy another copy of Windows to run the Client.

I still need to get a tuner card for my spare computer to evauate nPVR and then the fun begins.

NPVR supports extenders is fairly similar way to SageTV, but its important to note it supports different devices, so unfortunately you wont be able to try your HD100/HD200 devices as clients with NPVR. Instead NPVR supports the Popcorn Hour A100/110 and clone devices (eGreat, HDX etc).

Yes, I know my SageTV extenders won't work with NPVR but the fact NPVR supports hardware extenders at all makes it a good option for me.

Ok - cool. Didnt want you feeling let down when you worked it out yourself later.

Just a thought, in case any other SageTV users come looking here, would it not be worth having some kind of statement pointing out the similarities that SageTV shares with NextPVR?

Yeah, probably. I dont personally know that much about it though. I think 2004 was the last time I saw SageTV.

sub, don't get me started on a rant Big Grin

It is fine that you last saw Sage 2004 approx. I saw it approx 2006/7 when I was testing PVR solutions. Of course GB-PVR won Wink

It is the 'probably' that gets me to feel like ranting. Though I have been told with new baby on the way ranting is NOT good.

If you say probably, is that a good thing to do, or just not bother?
