I'd installed various drivers from ATI but looked on the Gigabyte site and there was an updated driver set from 200909 so installed that - it decided I just needed the northbridge driver and after switching the BIOS to AHCI, Vista booted fine and installed various drivers for the SATA controller, the WD disk and the blueray drive. Now I'm recording 2 HD progs while watching one of them (the football on ITV HD) as it continues to record. So far, so good! So I really hope that's solved my problems. The real test will be on Sat if the wife lets me record Strictly on HD.... Thanks loads for all your effort in helping with this one! Hope it helps someone else with crappy disk performance if doing lots of recording/playback at once.

sounds like great news!

The chipset/motherboard drivers are critical to a stable machine.

I know someone who physically couldn't install norton anti-virus until they installed the chipset drivers.

How it's fixed for good for you.
