Thanks for the reply Martin,
The update to latest PlayOn did the trick - the killing of PlayOn when selected in nPVR has ceased for both PC and NMT (i.e. NMT shares set back to share-name). So I'll leave that issue unless it comes back at which time I will post at the Universe support forum.

Before leaving this alternative of using IP in NMT share URL, which I would like to use if it is safe, would you expect that I would have needed to change the NMT HTML links to the IP-equivalent in order for the IP's in the shares to work? Just trying to understand if maybe I misinterpreted something there - as nPVR worked fine but not Universe/PlayOn.

Thanks as always,

I don't fully understand the question, but using the IP is 100% safe if you use static IP's, and there would be no correlation with the PlayOn issue.

I'll try to restate it

When changing to IP (e.g. PC is at 192.168.2.4) in the NMT shares menu - I also tried changing the address in the NMT HTML file to be consistent:
Code:
<a  class=static href="http://localhost.drives:8883/NETWORK_SHARE/191.168.2.4:mvpmc/npvr.cgi"> Start N- PVR </a>
(that was also the point at which I initiated the PlayOn problem, BTW)

So, should changing the HTML file not have been needed, or worse, been a colossal snafu?

EDIT: Since the 192.168.*.* IP's are assigned by the router - maybe they strictly are not 'static' IPs - might that be my misunderstanding a significant difference?

No, no, don't change the HTML file that is directly linked to the NMT Share Name which I ask people to avoid changing since this mismatch is the BIGGEST support problem there is. It would not cause PlayOn problems.

Personally I would not let my router set the IP on my NPVR server. Setting up a fixed IP in Windows is easy and 100% reliable.

When you say "Setting up a fixed IP in Windows is easy and 100% reliable" does that also mean that this fixed IP Widows setting is picked up by the router and then used by the router to identify the NPVR Server machine?????

If that's a yes - would you be so kind as to point to where in Win7 I would go to do that?

Thx,

Your favourite search engine should be able to help you better than me. "windows 7 static ip" As long as your router and NMT are on the same sub-net there should not be too many issues. You will need to edit npvr.cgi to change the IP to your new IP and that is about it. Once it is stable then change the smb: names to IP addresses.

I found this link for setting static IP in Win 7
http://blog.mclaughlinsoftware.com/2009/...static-ip/

Does this do what it was you were suggesting?

If I make the staic IP the same IP the router gave (192.168.2.4) -- will everything be okay?

Is there any way that if for some reason the router re-assigns IPs to the DHCP clients that it will assign the ...2.4 IP to some other client - or does it take the Win7 static IP before it assigns IP's to the other clients?

I'll stop now that I've demonstrated my command of WIn7 & networking Wink

Ok well maybe instead of easy I should have said straight forward. You get to choose your own static IP, just make sure the IP is outside the range you assign in your router to dhcp clients. You use the router IP as your gateway IP not the IP of your PC.

I told my router to only assign address between 192.168.x.x & 192.168.x.xx & then set my static IP's outside this range

I'm assuming that 'subnet is synonymous with subnet mask - and that if my Belkin router is set to a subnet mask 255.255.255.0 -and- Win7 is using the same subnet mask that all will be kosher?
