Did you mean if the MVP device crashes, or the copy of GB-PVR servicing a particular MVP crashes?

The plugin wouldn't be much help in either case, since it can't currently monitor the live status of the MVP device (first case) and would be killed off with the GB-PVR process (second case).

What I mean is occasionaly (well frequently) I'll do something on the MVP that causes it to go back to the "Contacting servers" screen. When it does this I have to restart the GB-PVR Recording service (the GB-PVR MVP server is started from the service) using a hotkey & script I've defined. Then the MVP loads the menu screen from the MVP server and all is well again.

Is there anyway that you can detect that the MVP has gone to "contacting servers" and give the MVP server a kick so that it talks to the client again?

(Typically what causes the crash is pressing "Guide" during playback or live TV).

I suppose I need a way of restarting just the MVP Server element without killing the GB-PVR Recording Service.

A guardian angel like this would seriously increase the WAF!

Cheers

Steves... have you looked into solving why the MVP won't reconnect to gbpvr's service? I occasionally get a "contacting servers..." screen when I invoke something that takes too long to respond. The first click of My Videos always does this for me, I think because I have so many movies spanned across 3 hard drives. However, when you get "contacting servers..." it really should be contacting them, and usually it reconnects in about 15 seconds or so. The fact that yours doesn't is probably worth looking into.

Are you using the gbpvr-supplied dongle.bin, or the one from your Hauppauge software install?

I get these dropouts occasionally (esp with LiveTV) and it won't restart the MVP until I restart GBPVR recording service upstairs i.e. the green recording icon just keeps running and it says contacting servers forever ... I'd be interested in how you restart it with your hotkey, but I guess that's at the computer in any case?

I was really hoping (sub? Major Hostility?) if possible, for an "auto-detect an instance of a MVP crash" under certain conditions i.e. NOT when it is recording a scheduled show, but at ANY other time e.g. during LiveTV or any other use of the GBPVR/MVP combo, followed by an auto-restart of the recording service :-) Theoretically if my system was 100% it should never happen in the first place, but if it did THAT behaviour would be great.

This phenomenon sometimes happens to my MVP, when it goes to "contacting servers" sometimes the best way was to restart the recording service, of course, I only restart it when there is no recording going on. In any case, how is the recording service tied up with the mediamvp server. Meaning, is there a way to restart the mediamvp server without restarting the recording service?

Hi, testing your utility, it does not seem to know that my MVP is connected or turned on, although I know it's connected and can be seen by my router. I put in the parameters in my config.xml under plugin settings as suggested
<MVPTrayIcon>
<MAC-000DFE003591>
<MVPName>Upstairs</MVPName>
</MAC-000DFE003591>
</MVPTrayIcon>

does not seem to recognize it. Does having a wireless setup have an effect on the utility.

Thanks

The value 000DFE003591 has to be the MAC address of your MVP
Change it to whatever your MVP's MAC is

You'll need to edit the value in the <MAC-####> section so that it contains the unique MAC address of your MVP. One way you can get this information is using the MVP Screen Position plugin from the wiki.

Also, in the current release, the MVP Tray Icon won't detect that your MVP is connected until you start actively streaming something to it.

The recording service keeps an eye on any MVP servers started as a result of the "autostart" setting. If one of them dies, the recording service will restart it.

Regarding my "hot key" I use an open source bit of code called AutoHotKey, which is really good for doing stuff with the keyboard, highly recommended. It simply runs a batch script that does a net stop net start when I press F1.

I had thought of using something like a girder script so I could use the remote, but then I'd have to pay for girder. But, this could be a possibility if you used a remote extender...

It would be nice to have a way of kicking the MVP server itself (a kind of kill -HUP for the UNIX folks).

Regarding the not reconnecting once it's failed, I noticed last night that it is reconnecting now (it used not to) so that's good. Maybe it's coz I'm using the GBPVR dongle.bin (from 93.10) rather than the Hauppauge one. Rather not have the crashes in the first place... (but that's a different story)
