I've been doing a little surfing today. Apparently some NIC cards have a wake on ping function. This might be the solution for waking up the server from mvp. It does not require a magic packet. Does anyone know the brand of a PCI network card that supports this?

Ping is just another magic packet the MVP doesnt send though, so I dont think that helps you.

I actually wasn't surprised at all, I guess everyone must either be relatively happy with dongle.bin or gbpvr.bin.

The current situation is that mvpmc is going through a major change with a new OS and compiler that will be support the new wireless MediaMVP and so you will be testing a little more than the wol. I will apply my wol changes tonight and send you a private message when I'm done.

If you want to get a head start grab the dongle from mvpmc.sourceforge.net or better still from http://mvallevand.googlepages.com/ to make sure you can load the dongle as a dongle.bin replacement and connect to gbpvr via the emulation mode. In my dongle there is manual support for wol so if you are comfortable with the command line and have 2 computers on your network send me a private message and I will walk you through it. My host computer with gbpvr doesn't have wol so I am curious how long the wake process will take.

I didn't realise this modification would not be done on the standard dongle.bin. However, I have tried MVPMC dongle from your site and it loads OK. GBPVR boots up in emulation mode but I don't seem to be able to rewind, fast forward etc. I see that you can set a ?default start up application but it doesn't seem to work for me. Apart from these minor problems all looks OK.

Your right, its not a modification, its a completely new dongle like gbpvr. Your also correct on the ff/rewind, all it does is play/stop/pause for now. In another message I've asked for the minimum functionality needed to add before getting some beta testers using gbpvr, but I haven't got any responses to date.

If you want to default to emulation mode, point your browser to the ip of your mvpmc and there is an option tell it "Startup Item:" and choose Emulation. The GO and then Back/Exit button will return you to mvpmc. I don't prefer this default because I use mvpmc mainly for streaming internet radio directly, rather then through another pc running gbpvr, but again you loss the ability to pause/ff/rewind since there is no local storage.

If you have two computers on your network and want to try a wol via telnet send me a private message. If you don't understand what I am saying, my update should be available in the next few days.

Ok the dongle on my site has both uPnP support in mvpmc itself and the wol in emulation mode.

For wol you need to connect to gbpvr first so I can store the address of your network card. Then use Go Back to exit emulation, power down your gbpvr pc in suspend mode (with wol enabled in your bios) and restart emulation mode.
Let me know how long it takes to restart, if it takes more then 20 seconds for it to come up try to get into emulation mode again.

Congratulations it works! Following your instructions above I restart emulation mode and the computer wakes from standby within 6-7 seconds. Unfortunately it takes a while for the computer to be ready to accept the request from the MVP and the emulation mode times out. After pressing emulation again it connects after 3-5 attempts. So basically GBPVR is ready for action after 20 seconds or so.

A couple of things are worth mentioning. If I turn off the MVP and restart the WOL connectivity appears to be lost. Lastly, can the number of attempts that the emulation mode makes at connecting be increased? This would allow the computer more time to wake up. I imagine it could be different for different PC's.

This WOL is fantastic and the dongle appears very stable, however having to give up functions like ff and rw limits its appeal. Do you plan to add these at a future stage?
