Well, I have finally got around to it, and now have a prototype that works. I can wake my computer from the MVP!

I’ve built a little circuit that monitors the video output of the MVP and asserts a Ring signal to the serial port when there is an active video output. If the BIOS is set to wake-on-ring, turning on the MVP will wake the computer.

There is, of course, the small problem of the computer going into standby while playing recordings on the MVP, so I’ve also written a little app that monitors the ring signal, and when active denies suspend requests, thereby keeping the PC awake. Turning the MVP off deactivates the ring signal, and my app allows suspend to function as normal :-)

sub Wrote:I agree that WOL would be put in the dongle.bin. I hardly ever remove the power from my MVP. I believe this WOL feature could be added without help from Hauppuage, but unfortunately I know I dont have the time to do it myself.

Someone would need to setup there linux machine to be able to build a dongle.bin, as described in the linux section of shspvr.com. Effectively you to create the same dongle as Hauppauge, using their pre-existing binaries for the couple of closed source programs from the original dongle.bin, but add a new program that is responsible for 'tailing' the log of the hauppauge mvp binary (which is quite verbose) looking for the 'coming out of standby' message. When you see this message, send the WOL packet.

This quote dates back to a discussion in 2004. At that time you seemed to agree that it would be possible in principle to do some Wake On LAN stuff in dongle.bin. The major obstacle was just doing the dongle. In the meantime you did the conversion to gbmvp.bin. Wouldn't you think it is worthwhile to reconsider implementing the elegant solution proposed in this thread? I am aware of your long todo-list, so I am not pushing, just curious.

Cheers, pz

Yes, I could do WOL in the gbmvp.bin, and it's already on my list of things to do when I find the time. I have no say over the other dongles though.

Thanks, looking forward to it. Indeed gbmvp.bin is the only obvious place to do it.

This really would be the icing on the cake for me.

I assume the way you would do it, is so whenever you perform a function on the MVP it sends a WOL packet (so you would not be able to turn the MVP off with remote)? Or would you be able to do it so that the MVP sends a WOL packet when the MVP is turned back on (via remote)?

Having WOL support would definitely be a plus for me as well. I hope that sufficient interest will help bump it up on your priority list :-)

Just to make sure its clear - when I do get add this, it'll only be with the gbmvp.bin dongle. I suggest you try this dongle, because you'll probably find there is other things you'd prefer fixed before I even start thinking about WOL.

Assuming the send_wol() function is ok in

http://etherboot.cvs.sourceforge.net/*ch...on=1.1.1.1

adding wol support to the mvpmc alternative dongle.bin would be trivial. I would store the mac address of your gbpvr server on connect and if the server is not found the next time emulation mode is entered, I'd wait 5 seconds, send the wol magic packet, and on success wait 40 seconds and attempt to connect again.

If anyone is willing to test it, I'd be glad to add it to see how it works for you.
This is definitely a feature where the majority of the work is in the testing not coding, and might also give sub a good starting point for a future enhancement.
