lol....OK....my video card (nividia has both sound and video out).....assuming I can get sound and video out on my machine....is this plan likely to work?

converting mpeg2 to dvd doesn't take long, since it is nearly the same file format and both use the same codec (mpeg2).

So is there anyone that knows what I would get for a dvd recording if I piped the both the sound and video out from my nvidia video card into my standalone dvd burner?

Well, mpeg2 files can have bit rates outside the DVD specs. So, you can have an mpeg2 file that doesn't meet the specs and you may be able to burn it to a DVD using software that has an option to skip the validation against the DVD spec, but it would fail to play in lot of the DVD players.
The best option would be to get your tuner card encode the video in bit rates that is within DVD specs. Then you don't have to reencode it to make it a DVD. I use the following as my "medium" quality setting and it will burn straight to DVD with no issues (see attached screenshot). I use Nero for burning DVDs. To answer aristottle, if you are trying to save time, then the tv out is a good idea. But, if you want good quality, burning straight to dvd would be the way to go.

What do you mean by burning "straight to dvd"? Do you mean that I am not saving the program to my hard drive first?
I have in the past downloaded movies online then converted them with Nero (seemed to be VERY time consuming) then used dvd shrink to shrink it...then Nero to burn it. Again time consuming. I am still trying to figure out what would happen if I saved the sopranos on my hard drive (through gbpvr) then piped it into my standalone dvd burner....60 minutes later would I have a dvd that was atleast as good as the original mpeg 2?

What I meant was that you can burn it without converting the mpeg2, if the file was originally recorded per DVD specs. If you edit your capture source settings to match my settings and record shows with that, you can use Nero to burn them to DVD. Nero has an option to not to convert the mpeg2 if it already conform to DVD specs.
If you use your tv out, it will most probably degrade the quality of your final DVD. Why not test it out?

which recording setting in the capture device setup needs to be chnaged for quick record in gb-pvr?

aristottle: if you are recording from a pvr150/500/250/350 then it should by default be dvd standard files being recorded already... you just have to 'author' them into a suitable dvd file structure..and burn.. i have a plugin that should be ready next few days that will do all that from transcode menus from within gbpvr with the remote..  what version do you use of gbpvr? my util only works with the newest version,but i have one that works on older ones also.. [check the GBPVR wiki for Showburner... in Utils] that one on wiki is made for gbpvr .97.13 and previous, next one is for 98.x+ i even added full descriptions and commercial skipping to the newest one..[but [it's not out yet...but very soon] it only requires Nero7 as a burn program...tho you could burn it with whatever you have installed that can burn dvd's... am working on the installer so check back next few days...i guarantee it'll be the fastest program to do the job as it combines steps to shorten the building/burning process that most others can't... [i've only seen one commercial prog that could beat it speed wise] anyways,back to dev. let me know if you have any problems..

Hey, you guys answered my questions from another post! Cool. But, what is the best DVD software to use but also, in gbpvr, how do you get at the recordings? Is it easy to access? Where are they stored? I have Nero and DVD Shrink. Do you think it's a good way if I use one or should I use both? I haven't tried gbpvr yet but I would like to know what the options are and how I would record and burn. |
