I haven't completed the set up for my pvr yet, but I have two questions that, if you can help with, will enable me to buy and setup the proper equipment:

  1. Using a Media MVP, can I actually bring up my GBPVR software to the TV and control it, or do I have to use the interface provided by Media MVP? For example, can I have GB-PVR running on my computer (server?) and have the Media MVP show it (on the TV) and allow me to use my Hauppauge remote to watch and buffer live TV, schedule recordings, see the other plug-ins like weather, etc?
  2. Can I look at the GB-PVR Web Anmin webpage to do my searches on the TV (through Media MVP)?

I have the PVR-150 and also a EMuzed Maui card which I think works with GB-PVR.

Thanks very much,
Dave

You get the full GB-PVR user interface and schedule recordings etc

No. You just get the GB-PVR interface.

Alrighty, this is coming along (in my head, anyway). Here's a few more to show my lack of understanding:

  1. If I want the MVP to display GBPVR on the TV, does the server have to have GBPVR running in the foreground, or can the person on the server be surfing the internet or working in another application?
  2. Using 2 tuners and Media MVP, can I have the server play a recording on it's own screen (recording, live tv, etc) while having the client (MVP device to TV in another room) play a completely different recording????? Or does the MVP just display what is on the server, and in that case, even if I had a dozen MVPs, they'd play the same video (or instance of GBPVR)?

Thanks,
Dave (member of the huge sub fanclub)

Yes, you can use the computer while someone is using the MVP, depending on the system you won't even notice it.

and

Yes you can watch different recordings on the MVP and the server, again depending on your system you won't even know the MVP is on.

When the grandkids visit i can have 4 MVP's watching different recordings and another playing music and my system is still very usable for other things.

The only time i notice it's running at all is when comskip/comclean is removing commercials. Smile and for that it's worth the little hit on system resources.

Excellent! Please, tell me the specs on your system so I can purchase the correct hardware. I assume you'd need 4 tuners if you wanted each grandkid to be able to watch TV. And, would you also need 4 tuners if they all wanted to watch the same TV channel - in other words does each client MVP require the server to have it's own tuner if all are operating at once?

Gee, I think I might be understanding a little and confusing myself more at the same time!!!!

Each client MVP can watch different recordings or the same recording streamed from the PC simultaneously with no tuner required to view previously recorded TV (media).

If you're wanting to watch different channels of live / time-shifted TV on all the different client MVP TVs, you'd need a PC tuner for each TV.

If you're not watching live / time-shifted TV, there'd be no sense in using the MVP at the TV for that purpose.

This is great stuff and you've only scratched the surface.

for the most part i don't use the tuner to watch live tv. Their all sitting in front of a tv already, if they want to watch it they can just change the channel. What GBpvr gets used for mostly is recording and music. You could certainly put 4 tuners in and do it that way if you like, i believe tipstir does something like this. For me it's a recording and music machine.

The MVP's don't need a tuner at all, unless you want to watch live TV.

Basic system spec's are P4 3.2ghz, 1g ram, 1tb storage, nvideo geforce 5600 for video, the usual comliment of cd/dvd drives.

The MVP's are very easy on system resources, they do most of the work.

One of your first questions was...
\\

and sub answered no you just get the GBPVR interface...

but remember you do have the TV Guide functionality of web admin on the MPV as well as selecting programs to record / view / etc.

Instead of getting 4 tuners, get a large harddrive as it gets pretty full quickly. As much as possible, separate it from the system HD, if you plan to use the PC for other purposes.

Although, i recommend at least 2 tuners to record 2 shows at the same time. I hardly use Live TV as I just used a cable splitter one going directly to my tv and another to my tuner. The PVR500 is a good choice since it will occupy only 1 pci slot.

If you are building it, go for Hauppauge products as it this will make your setting up a lot easier, as GBPVR is fully setup for Hauppauge products
Win XP Pro SP 2
ASUS P5k-PRO Dual Core 3.0 GHZ with 4GB RAM
1 Seagate 150 GB SATA HD
1 Seagate 1TB SATA HD
1 Seagate 750 GB SATA HD
1 Hauppauge PVR500MCE
2 MVP (2 Wired / 1 Wireless via 2 Linksys WRT54G routers)
1 dead MVP (searching for replacement)

OK, so I've got a lot of info and thus another question!!!

Can I watch a recorded program on the server AND watch something different on the MVP connected client? This will help me decide if I need s-video out on the server (and if so, I'm leaning toward one of the 6150 video motherboards).

I guess I don't full understand if MVP client will run its own instance of GBPVR.

Thanks for all your help!
