Basic setup for a MCE remote

I have followed the wiki to install my mce remote. (MCE IR reciever with a logitec Harmony remote emulating a MCE remote)

I downloaded the full hip software and started to follow the wikki. What i don't understand is:

Is there a standard (preinstalled) config for the MCE remote in hip or do I have to learn every command to HIP.

For now i can walk true the menu of GBPVR but with every key it skips two times. I can adjust this on the harmony remote but maybe i have to adjust it in hip.

Is there someone with a step by step guide how to set this up? I only want to use the remote to do things in GBPVR and don't need to setup ir blasters (hipsend ???)or so to send ir command to other boxes.

If you were using the orginal DLL's for the MCE remote, the ones included in WinMCE or WinXP pro you wouldn't need any additional software like HIP. If you are using the replacment driver provided with HIP you have no choice but to set up each key's function.

The good news is that if you went the HIP route you can map almost any code from any remote (or remote config) to do what ever you want. So you could select a code in your remote for a DVR or VCR you dont really have and then map those IR codes in HIP to GBPVR functions.

If your goal was to make it work with the least amout of software/work use the orginal MCE drivers and set your remote to MCE.

MMm ok that sounds cool. So if i only plug in the ir reciever and program my harmony remote as a mce remote i can run GBPVR and navigate DVD menu's with it?

But if i want some more ... for example start en stop gbpvr with the remote i have to use hip and program every key of the remote?

Of cource we like the hard way hihihih ...Are the settings (the keys i learned to hip) saved in a file for if i want to use it on another pc ?

Do you know why it skips now two times when i hit one time a button?

HI,
I use a hybrid situation. I use the standard driver for all remote keys except the green button, for this I use HIP to start GBPVR. This can be done by going into hip's preferences under other input devices and clearing out all of the system wide keys. Then you can remap the keys that you want (e.g. green button to start gbpvr) and leave the default microsoft driver to handle the other keys.

Do you mean with standard driver the standard XP driver? Where can i see the key mappings of that? Because when i don't start HIP i can walk true the GBPVR menu but i'm not able to use the menu options (skip, menu, ed) for example when playing a DVD.

When I remove all the system wide keys (think that clears also the problem with skipping two times when hitting one time a remote key??? ) I can use all the key's a second time?

Sorry if I ask to much but i don't understand using the remote for now verry well.

the two skips is a result of not using the right config/drivers/dll files. Look over the wiki very closely - if you have put the wrong thing in, you get a double skip. It got me when i first used it to.

Now i just use girder and the default MCE remote options in gbpvr, its easier + the remote functions more reliably and with much greater speed, i find.

May sound horrible, but i really dont rate HIP at all. It works ok, but girder + the standard mce set up is much easier and more powerful to get running. Hips definitely not bad, and its certainly powerful, but its a little confusing and takes a lot more tweaking to make it work 'nicely' i find - but hell, its free so you cant complain really can ya!

I downloaded the trial from Girder and did take a quick look. Looks verry nice and there is also a manual.....

I can't make sense in a short time with HIP so i will give this a try. Is it easy to setup?

I'm using HIP with my Hauppauge MCE remote and associated USB beanbag and IR blaster.

I followed the wiki configuration which is not completely up to date.

My HIP installation came with an MCE remote profile so that I did not have to program any keys to integrate the remote with GB-PVR, contrary to the wiki.

HIP is sort of a PITA to configure but once it is working seems to be OK. It isn't perfect, I'm getting an occasional null pointer exception.

If Girder is really that much better (meaning rock solid and easier to configure both on the receiving AND sending/blasting end) I'd consider paying for it. US$50 seems a little steep for a remote processor.

So today I give Girder a closer look. I had to install the mce plugin to get my (mce/philips) ir reciever to accept commands from my remote. And test some buttons with GBPVR and looks like to work with all the basic buttons.

Does anyone know if it is possible to use one remote button in more than one application? For example: use button 1 on the remote to go to channel 1 in GBPVR and to start notepad. Now GBPVR goes to channel 1 and also notepad is starting.

Did setup the girder-trial and it work very ok. There is a GBPVR.gml alreay installed and the only thing had had to do was assign a remote button to some actions.

Works great !!!
