This does work with GBPVR to a degree. You can either use the VFD or RC with GBPVR but not both together.
The iMON VFD works by not installing the iMON software and instead using 'LCD Smartie' with the Axcis iMON driver and Fooman's GBPVR plugin for Smartie Alternatively you can install the iMON software and map the RC keys to GBPVR keyboard shortcuts. IMO the RC is not user friendly, and instead I use the RC supplied with my capture card. This is what most people do.

I have a similar setup, but yet to get LCD Smartie working with it. My question is can I use the VFD with LCD Smartie, and just use the IR receiver that's built into the Imon VFD? I want to use an MCE remote using that IR receiver.

I don't think the iMON IR receiver can recognise MCE RC commands. My Cyberlink remote is based on the MCE remote and it doesn't work with the iMON IR receiver.
The iMON IR receiver does have it's own Windows USB device driver, separate to the VFD driver, but the IR receiver appears to still rely on the iMON application to translate IR commands whereas MCE commands are handled natively within Windows and I suspect this difference in operation is why the iMON IR receiver does not work with the MCE remote. In my case, I have additionally installed the Cyberlink IR receiver and the two IR receivers work independantly of each other without any problems.
