I'm recording all content in High Def, and actually only have HD capture cards. I had hoped to use my laptop as a front end (client), but its video card isn't quite up to snuff, and I get jerkey video with sound WAY off whenever streaming live tv and/or watching recorded content.

I was hoping there was some way to have the server transcode streamed content to clients, so my little ol' laptop wouldn't have to decode full HD content.

I know this is done with the MediaMVP, but can it be done with just a regular client? If not, is there some way I can make my laptop "emulate" an MVP?

thanks - Joel

You could do it through EWA (Enhanced Web Admin) You can stream video and livetv to any networked computer and you can set the streaming parameters.
AMD Athlon 64 3000, HDD: 80, 120, 200 GB, Hauppauge 350 + 150, MVP, Asus 6000L Laptop client, Asus X50sl client,
Fritz!box 7140 modem/router, GBPVR 1.3.7.

I haven't yet seen the EWA yet... I'll probably download it regaurdless. Is the EWA easy enough that I could use it with a remote?

You don't have to download it, it's in the gbpvr install, just enable it in config-misc. Read the wiki about opeping ports etc. I don't know about remote, I guess it should be possible.

teststrips, I see that you reached the Cassini web server, but not the page. You probably are not using the correct address for the web page:
http://localhost:7647/gbpvr
where 7647 is the port you configured in the config app.
AMD Athlon64 2800+
1GB DDR and 2x 160GB SATA HDD
ATI Radeon X1650Pro AGP 8x 512MB DDR
1x OnAir HD, 2x HVR1600, 1x PVR-150
Cox Analog Cable and OTA ATSC
Windows XP SP3
GBPVR (>= 1.3.7)

ahh... no wonder it wasn't working... I just assumed that localhost:7647 would get me what I needed. Thanks!

You are welcome. Smile
By the way, Media player Classic (the free non-MS player) plays HD content well (mpg format) even with low powered video cards.
