VHS -> Mpeg -- brightness/contrast

So to improve WAF and show off how cool GBPVR is, I hooked up my video recorder to my PVR250 and recorded our wedding video to mpeg for posterity.

Some of the scenes in the original are, however, far too bright and need to be corrected.

Does anyone know of a good free (idiot proof) tool to adjust brightness/contrast?

You will probably want to re-record the video using some of the tweak tools to lower the captured brightness. Once the video signal has been distorted, it will be difficult or impossible to correct since the mpeg is basically incorrect to begin with.

This is also assuming the photographer did not add severe macrovision to the tape to prevent copying. They have a nasty habit of claiming the copyright to the video of your wedding.

It was a friend who shot the video for us (more homemade than professional kind of thing).

I thought there might be some program out there that I could use to adjust the brightness/contrast like I would for a still photo in any graphics software.

If you use wintv2000 you can adjust brightness, saturation and contrast through the preferences-color menu. I think it's even easier to use for a task like this than gbpvr.

Yes, it certainly better adjusting things when recording them rather than after it had been recorded otherwise the dynamic range is restricted.
Same applies to stills, better adjusting the scanner than the data on disk afterwards.
