direct recording config/remote setup problems

the more i goof around with this remote, the more skeptical i am that it actually WORKS. when you guys with MCE remotes plugged in your usb remote receiver, could you move the mouse icon or control anything in windows with the remote? i havent been able to do ANYTHING with mine, although the reveiver lights up when i use the remote.
