GB PVR is MUCH easier to use, and has a lot of features that almost ALL pvr software out there lacks. Plus sub is incredibly helpful, and the community isn't in the least snobbish.

I got MythTV working on a computer, just to see if I could. I had it decrypting satellite, but never tried to record a show. Everything seemed to work ok. Didn't try for the remote though. The thing is that Linux is an incredible system, but also incredibly difficult and frustrating at times unless you know how the inner workings work. I do love the 64bit support, and I wish I had that in the Windows world.

But really, I hate Windows. It's bulky, sloppy, and unstable. Plus it's much more prone to virus and spyware problems. It'd be really cool to see the ease of use and the great programming in GBPVR put to use in Linux. I use Suse Linux everywhere except on my PVRs, because GBPVR is just that much better than MythTV, so much so that I swallow the pride and use Window$.

To me the OS isn't that important because I'm just using a single application in my htpc, and Windows seems to fit the bill well enough for HTPC applications.
I do think Windows takes a lot of heat for being unstable, and to me, win2k and winxp are fairly stable. I leave my system on 24-7 and I don't see any issues. It's an incredible amount of work to port an application like GBPVR to Linux especially given there is really only one programmer doing the core application. I could understand porting it to Linux if you were creating a standalone product given all of the free IP, but since most people have a Windows box at home, it seems like a good fit.
Btw, I use Linux at work, and always fight off the move to switch to windows.

I use linux for everything, and use Windows only for GBPVR and rFactor. I did try to use MythTV, but it is too complicated to set up.

I use "cat /dev/video0 > recording.mpg" sometimes in linux though Smile

I don't think XP is all that unstable for a PVR.
Most of my PVR installs have minimal apps installed.
I think it's poor programming that causes XP to crash more than XP itself.
I can run GBPVR for months.
Having it sleep / wake / record ect. without rebooting or crashing.

On Linux,

Last night I was fooling around on one of my older machines with a linux distro.
The PC is a 933mhz P3 with 256mb ram & an Fx5200 AGP card.
I got the thing to playback a 1080i movie trailer in .TS format almost flawlessly.

I'm going to see if I can dig up more Ram to see if that caused the occasional pause as well as see what other processes might of been running.
I did switch to a minimal window manager & that helped a lot.
The video player app never went above %60 cpu usage.

The video card also only has a 64mbit memory bus.
Unfortunatly only nvidia cards provide the video acceleration reguired to make such a feat possible under Linux

This has me wondering how hard it would be to access the GBPVR database from a Linux app.

I know for a fact that the same PC with 512mb ram wouldn't even touch HD with purevideo in windows.

but, thrying to set up some kind of front end that can browse my media server with a remote control in Linux is a pain in the butt & every time I attempt it I get frustrated after a few hrs of getting nowhere & move on.

Hence the beuty of GBPVR on windows.
For me for the most part it just works.
And it works well.

The DB is sqlite, so it is easy. I tried some experiments from a little python script, I had no problems.

The Hauppauge Media MVP uses Linux, so I think it should be possible for someone to develop an app that would allow a linux box to emulate an MVP.

There is no way it'd work under wine.

I went to the mvpmc & it looks to me that it is just different software to load on an MVP I didn't see it advertised as software to run on Linux.
