I have a lot of stuff starting to accumulate. What's the simplest way of making a dvd with multiple items, which is playable in a stand-alone dvd player? TIA

Sorry, there is no built in DVD recording features. There is some plugins that provide this type of functionality, but I've not used them myself.

I think the simplest thing I ever used for this was ULead Movie factory, which seems to come bundled with most capture hardware.
I preferred to use Pinnacle Studio, back when I was into this. Other non-free products people will recommend are Adobe Encore and Sony Vegas. You may find that free and easy are mutually exclusive goals. Check here: http://www.videohelp.com for more info on freeware stuff.

Check your dvd player's specs to see if it will play mpeg2 files saved as a data disk rather than having to create the video_ts structure. If so these disks are far faster and simpler to write. I have a phillips dvp-642 which does this.
I've probably created far more silver coasters than playable DVD's

i made showburner to integrate into gbpvr, burns with all info fro title descriptions on menus on dvd with comskip converted into chapters for skipping as well..
it can be found on wiki and has installer.. it must be used from video library transcode buttons, but it isn't hard once you've done it once.. http://gbpvr.com/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Utility/ShowBurner [it does work with gbpvr 1.0.8+ just haven't updated wiki yet] there is also a newer 'plugin' style burner that's new.. http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php?t=28355 tho still kinda fresh off the presses, he just added ntsc to the mix..

i gave it a shot a while back, but made so many changes adding features i'd have to start from scratch...just never looked right..
currently working on making a dir with fake files so you can see the list of files to burn, so maybe when i get that working..[next version] man i wish dvdauthor had actual docs...[most entries just say 'foobar' grr] or someone would come up with a true command line dvd author'er..
