I found the way they've done it very rude.

No warning at all, no email. Nothing. Just have cut, shut down the website (labs.zap2it.com).

By the way where's their pay service?

With Zap2it, you had to log in every few months to renew the subscription. They had posted a warning on that renewal site for quite a while. They were quite direct, blaming other PVR hardware as the fault for shutting down.... but they were never rude...

. . . I received a renew email August 19. Maybe I was too quick to renew (in a hurry to go in vacation ), but I didn't seen any notice about their upcoming closure.

They should have sent an email, it's no magic ! :-)

By the way, it was very nice for them to provide this service for free for so long time.

I think they failed to leverage their service, as surely a lot of people was connected to it. They should have take advertizing agreement with PVR software makers that relied on it.

For example, they could ask to mandate an advertizing banner just in top of the TV-GUIDE in PVR software (when you use their service).

Some of the guys from MythTV and XMLTV have formed a non-profit organisation to license and resell zap2it listings for use in various apps. You can find out more about that service at www.schedulesdirect.org.

To ensure they can meet the high costs of licensing the data from TMS (zap2it), they're currently charging $15 for three months, though they hope to reduce this to around $20 per year once they have enough members. They've already passed the break even point for the current $5 per month, so there will definitely be a price reduction at the end of that three month period. The more people that sign on, the cheaper it'll be, so I'm encouraging people to support them for the sake of all NA users.

Thanks for this ! I'll consider give it a try at $15/3 months. $20/year is definitely reasonable.
