MVP on subset 1, GBPVR on subnet 2

I'm interested in seeing if this is possible, NATing between the two subnets. I can ping the GBPVR pc from a pc on subset 1, and stream video to the pc via VLC, but at startup, the MVP cannot find the GBPVR pc to load the dongle (I think) because it keeps asking to "rescan".

Because of the NAT'ing, the GBPVR doesn't or can't see the MVP initially? Is this the case, is it necessary for the GBPVR to set up a session that in this case is being blocked by the NAT'ing? Is there a TCP or UDP port that must be open (fwd'd)???

I've moved the MVP onto subnet 2, and find that everything works fine.

This is indeed not possible. The dungle is transmitted trough tftp which does not work across NAT. Have a look at the following website: http://www.tftp-server.com/tftp_server_faq.html

You can have a tftp server on one subnet and gbpvr on another and it can work if the routing between your subnets is setup properly. I've done it with mvpmc on several occasions. It is a bit trickier with revision H mvp's

mvallevand, can you explain the specifics as I did not manage. The question here was two subnets with a NAT router separating them.

Since tftp can not work trough NAT due to protocol issues I assume one would have to set up the tftp server within te subnet where the MVP resides and somehow get the MVP to find GBPVR on the other subnet (this is probably simply port forwarding on the router).

I'm actually not sure that tftp is restricted to the subnet, it would make it very difficult networks that distribute boot files via dhcp but I think for this discussion it would be much easier to create a tftp server on one subnet.

If you want to try, I would suggest seeing if mvpmc loads, and then connect to it via telnet and see if you can ping out to your GBVPR server. If that works I think by specifying the IP on the command line you'd be ok. dongle.bin.config can be loaded via tftp too.

Also for others trying this there is more involved on rev. H boxes.

ok, if this is possible, I'd like more info, perhaps the late hour is making me a little slow... so I'll offer up a picture of what I'd like to do, the MVP being on the right at 192.168.2.2, while GBPVR is 192.168.1.104.

Any reason why you're doing NAT and not just plain routing between 2 subnets?

originally, I was looking for a Wireless AP at this location to simply extend my wireless network (very long house from where the cable comes into the house)

Went to Fry's, home wireless "G" router on sale, $20, basic AP, $80

I tried to initially set it up without DHCP, allow main router to provide IP addresses, couldn't figure out how to "not NAT" with this router, eventually settled on NAT and allowing it's own DHCP to run a 2nd subnet. Manufacturer has been less than helpful in all of this.

Haven't had any time to explore other alternatives, am thinking I might get a static route table setup in this thing...

Short answer - no reason other than I can't figure out how to turn NATing off

When I saw the diagram this morning I thought the same thing as ecltech since your question became quite a bit more complicated. It's no longer really two subnets, you are trying to connect betwen two separate local LAN's. Before bothering with things like port forwarding and all the other tricks involved make sure that your can ping between the PC on the network 1 and the PC on network 2, and from the PC on the non-GBPVR network to the MVP on the other network.

Since you want to extend the network I think you should look into a wireless bridge versus what you're trying to do. NATing will cause you all kinds of pain because the broadband type routers doesn't give you a lot of flexibility with NAT (heck, you can't turn it off). I know you can do a wireless bridge using DD-WRT firmware (I've tested it before and it works great). The downside is that you lose half the bandwidth for every hop you put in a wireless bridge. Since you only have one this may not be so bad and both locations will be on the same network so no need for NAT or anything else.

I know Linksys has a few range extenders/repeaters and I'm sure you can find the same for other manufacturers. However, I think the easiest would be to use DD-WRT firmware on both your routers and setup the repeater that way.
