playback of recorded DVD won't start

I've got DVD that I have used DVD decoder to put on the hard drive, when I try to play them back with PVRx2 (under video tab) it will immediatly go back to the main menu without playing. GBPVR seems to play just fine. Other video (i.e. downloaded, or pulled from recorded TV works fine). Any thoughts?

I see this in one of the logs:

I had overlay manager as the video renderer for both PVRX2 and GPBVR, and it worked for all but the video (from DVD's specifically) I changed the PVRX2 to VMR9 custom and it works. Overlay manager works fine for GBPVR though.

Is this expected behaviour?
