Thank you Stustunz !
It's been helpful and educating.

1. MPEG 1 is VCD/VHS quality - it is still in use for any purpose ?

2. MPEG 2 has no restrictions on resolution nor bitrate, so it could be used for high definition movies ?

3. MPEG 3 = MP3 = been used only for audio encoding ?

4. MPEG 4 - what's the main different between MPEG2 and MPEG4 ?

5. Generally speaking, what is the relation between MPEG X and know buzzwords such as DivX, xVid, etc ? divx is spefici MPEG 4 (for example) implementation ?

they are all different ways of compressing the data
if left in the raw format then the files would be much larger
the problem with compression is they all have loss
so depending on how much loss you can handle you use a different compression format
as technology gets better they can cress them more with less loss
hence the reason you have so many new ones coming out

dont ask me why they have so many but it will get worse with time as there are more and more ways of compressing the data then you need to decompress it to watch it

a recent fight was the blue ray versus HD dvd end result of watching was similar but the way they are compressed is different

Thanks !

In order to make order in my thought, it will be highly appreciated if you can clarify the following aspects :

Thanks !

In order to make order in my thought, it will be highly appreciated if you can clarify the following aspects :

1. MPEG 1 is VCD/VHS quality - it is still in use for any purpose ? home video

2. MPEG 2 has no restrictions on resolution nor bitrate, so it could be used for high definition movies ? it is used for HD in some countries

3. MPEG 3 = MP3 = been used only for audio encoding ? mpeg is just a name so mp3 took that name

4. MPEG 4 - what's the main different between MPEG2 and MPEG4 ?difference way of compression

5. Generally speaking, what is the relation between MPEG X and know buzzwords such as DivX, xVid, etc ? divx is spefici MPEG 4 (for example) implementation ? they are different encoders (lossey compression)

so the mpeg is just a name for compression just like nissan is a brand of car

dont know if i have helped

1. MPEG1-4 is just a brandname, or a specific compression algorithem ?

2. What's the different between MPEG 2 and 4 - you said that both used for HD,
so it's just a different algorithem ?

3. if MPEG 4 (for example) is compression algorithem, so what's DivX ? another algorithem ?

q1 mpeg is a sort of a standard but inside that you can have slightly different variations on that particular standard so what may playback with one codec you may need a different codec for the next mpeg video you playback from a different source (slightly different algorithm but still fits that type)

q2 yes different algorithm (compression)

q3 this is where its gets really confusing
a mpeg 4 can be a divx xvid avc but they all fit under the mpeg4 standard

HD =anything with resolution above 1280x720 in simple terms (resolution on screen)
where as divx avi xvid are compressions (way the data is stored)

they are all just compression standards

So any MPEG (1,2,3,4) is an algorithem standard for data compression,
The version of MPEG (1,2,3,4) is the algorithem standard evolution,
and all codecs (such as divx, vidx, avc, etc) are different implementation of mpeg algorithem ?

MPEG (pronounced M-peg), which stands for Moving Picture Experts Group, is the name of a family of standards used for coding audio-visual information (e.g., movies, video, music) in a digital compressed format

the rest of what you said is correct
