xvid for example can be a mpeg4 cause it meets the requirments of the mpeg4 standard

MPEG is a name of a family of standards,
But MPEG 1 is a name of one specific standard (within the family),
MPEG 2 is a name of another specific standard (within the family), and so on ?

basically if you watch SD it will be mpeg2
music will be mpeg3 or (microsoft version wma similar for music)
HD will be either mpeg2 or mpeg 4 depending on country and who broadcast it to you and what standard they choose
then if you download some crap off internet that will be compressed to make real small and thats when divx xvid come in but they will try and sneak in under mpeg4 even if they just meet the standard mpeg4 was meant to be more compressed (smaller files for same info) than mpeg 2 but because of how things go with IT its evolved into been used for HD material and just gone in all directions

So how come that one movie is encoed with MPEG 2 ?
mpeg2 is just a standard, not real compression (like divx...)

I understand the MPEG (1,2,3,4) is not just a standard, which only derived codecs (like divx, xvid, etc.) are real implementation, but mpeg (1,2,3,4) is also implementation, and not only a standard for other codecs to implement.

starts off with raw data then it is compressed using a standard (set of rules it must meet to be that standard)
mpeg2 has its set of rules so the hardware mpeg2 encoder that comes on the better analog tuner cards encodes using that set of rules

another example the standard been mpeg4 the encoder been divx which meets the mpeg4 standard so therefore if you use the divx encoder you end up with a mpeg4 file

yes mpeg2 is compressed just not as much as divx it has a different set of requirments that it meets to give it the name mpeg2

but to make a mpeg file you can use different software/hardware encoder

encoder compresses the file
decoder/codec decompresses the file

which ever encoder you choose to use make the file fall under a different standard
it doesnt mean that what plays with one codec will play with the next because inside that file it could be very different

mpeg standard then it splits>>mpeg1 standard
>>mpeg2 standard
>>mpeg3 standard
>>mpeg4 standard

mpeg2 doesnt give people scope to make it to different from other mpeg2 encoders so then what will play with one mpeg codec should play with most others not saying that inside that mpeg file it will be very different but it still meets that standard

when you say real compression you are talking more lossy compression
divx =very lossy
mpeg2 =compression but not lossy

just cause someone says mpeg2 its doesnt mean its exactly the same as another mpeg2 file its just the name has stuck to decribe that file

where as divx with marketing has got theres to stick where in actual fact its really mpeg4 which is why when you down load the xvid codec it will play the divx movie fine
because the xvid codec is for playing mpeg4 so if the file meets the mpeg4 standard the in theory is a codec that decodes mpeg4 should be able to play any file that meets that standard
