Long story. I hope someone can help. Here are the highlights:

Xp SP3
GB-PVR v1.2.13
nvidia 8800gts 512
4G RAm
Intel Core2 Duo E6850 3.00GHz
Huappauge HVR4000
New Zealand DVB-S

I was fooling around with GB-PVR a week or so ago and was immediately impressed that it seemed fairly close to working. Particularly when it comes to the EPG and actually recording something. More than could be said for the software that shipped with my tv card.

Anyway; with GB-PVR v1.2.9 and Xp SP2 the only BDA Multiplexer that seemed to work with reliable playback was DVR-MS. The issue with DVR-MS seemed to happen while the recording was completing. Playback during recording seemed to always be fine, but often once the recording was complete nothing could play it reliably. I started converting these broken files to WMV files, but the audio becomes so far out of sync after 10 minutes that watching a recording is like having teeth pulled.

I tried fooling with quartz.dll, but clearly hadn't read the instructions properly and caused a PC that could play nothing. Google's only suggestion seemed to be to re-install XP. Yea right. Fortunately I came across the k-lite codec pack that re-registered quartz.dll for me and I was back in business. Still no joy though. Admittedly this may still be worth mucking around with, but I'm done going it alone. Actually I'm starting to wonder if Google actually has the answer to my problem. Hard to believe, I know!

Then I installed SP3 and GB-PVR 1.2.13. I read somewhere (here?) that SP3may solve the quartz.dll issues. Things have improved, but not so much that I'm actually a happy camper. DVR-MS still fails to make useful files 90% of the time. Cyberlink and TS make files that work, but seeking in these works poorly at best, a particular annoyance is the inability of GB-PVR to resume where you left off watching one of these recordings.

In summary, I am unable to consistently record TV in a way that gives shudder-free playback, synchronised audio and accurate seeking (including commercial skipping)

Comments and help greatly appreciated.

Aaron.

Couple of things here.

With the muxes being used. Have you tried a recording, then playing back in something else?

I have read also that the SP3 fixes the quartz.dll issue, but I haven;t tried that myself.

I had limited success with a previous installation with the cyberlink mux (also with k-lite installed) and so used the ATI mux flawlessly for about 6 months.

After a re-build where I refused to install k-lite I can happily use either the cyberlink or the ati mux.

You could also try the TS Mux...

Sigh, everything I could find, including VLC & MPC

This is a new one on me. I guess I have nothing to lose by giving it a go.

This is my fear. I'm sick of re-installing XP. I'm hoping that someone can shed some light on this without going to that trouble.

Tried. That's what I'm using at the moment. Currently the most consistently reliable, but seeking is still a sham.

With the ts mux there is an internal TSReader and if you have the cyberlink power dvd you can also use the cyberlink tsreader. These are options that you have to play with in the config.xml file.

Not sure what I can suggest other than that. sub is the one that would be able to answer better. But he's not online for a couple of days.

When i last re-installed I made sure I took plenty of images (6) in the various states of install, so that i could got back to various levels on install. - But they always say hindsight is always 20/20 .

I had a snoop around config.xml and didn't see anything interesting about cyberlink, but my patience is wearing thin. I'll have another look around tomorrow when I'm fresher.

I also had a quick Google for the ATI mux. I have found a dll, but can't find any docco about what to register.

Maybe it's just late, but if anyone has a link handy I'd be grateful. I'm starting to see the world through google coloured goggles, and it ain't pretty!

Bump.

I got bored looking for the ATI mux. I have been watching the recordings primarily on an Ubuntu box in another room so this has seemed like less of an issue. I'd still like to solve it though because it was so close to perfect before.

As an aside, has anyone found a good Ubuntu player for TS files?

What happens when you use the Cyberlink and ATI muxes? Both of these works fine for me.

What version of the Cyblerink did you try? post the output of muxchecker
GB-PVR has detected the following multiplex filters on your machine:

Found: CyberLink MPEG Muxer
FILE: C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerCinema\Kernel\VideoProcessor\MDMpgMux.ax
VERSION: 5.0.1727

Found: CyberLink MPEG Muxer
FILE: C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerCinema\Kernel\DV\PCMDV_MpgMux.ax
VERSION: 5.0.2221

Found: CyberLink MPEG Muxer
FILE: C:\WINDOWS\system32\mpgmux.ax
VERSION: 5.0.0727
To be honest I have no idea which of these I tried. This is starting to feel like a Rubik's cube. I'm good to keep fooling around until it works though; it feels so close, and it's already so much better than TV it's ridiculous

The issues with using the Cyberlink mux are juddering playback and unreliable seeking.

If you have multiple cyberlink muxes installed, it always ends up using the first one in the list.

I'm personally using the 5.0.1307 version, and its been great, so I've never spent much time testing other versions. I would of thought any newer versions would also be fine, but maybe you should try tracking down this same problem.

Also, are you sure its a recording problem, not a plaback problem? juddering playback could be the quartz.dll problem.

What do you mean by unreliable seeking? As long as the duration of the recording looks correct, then chance are the mux has done its job correctly, and playback demux or source filter responsible for seeking are causing you problem. Reproduce it, then zip and attach the pvrx2.exe-native.log, along with a description of what happened and I'll take a look.
