You dont really get this happening for broadcast MPEG material. Its either 4:3 or 16:9. If they're broadcasting a 2.35 video, its broadcast as 16:9 and includes black bars in the video frame to letterbox to 2.35. Same thing with DVDs etc.

AVIs work differently. They have square pixels, with 1:1 aspect ratio, which the application dynamically calculates the placement based on the resolution of the video.

Quote:- Are the default settings in the config file created dynamically based on the TV shape?
No, they were precalculated. These dont typically change, but I put them in the config file so people could tweak them if they wanted to. (For example, people wanting to watch 4:3 video on a 16:9 tv without black bars left/righ, could tweak the 'Pillarbox' aspect ratio to do whatever they want)

No, its never been done that way in GB-PVR - even in the old UI.

The problem with doing this is the OSD gets stuffed up. ie, if you let the video decoder pillar box the video, then the OSD looks horizontally squashed and only goes as far as the black bars.

FIXED!
Alright, first thanks for providing me with a good understanding of how AR works. The problem that produced the funny AR shown in the caputured screen is that the PillarBox AR was wrong for my TV (16:9)

<AspectRatioMode name="PillarBox" ratio="0.08,0,0.92,1" />

The correct one is

<AspectRatioMode name="PillarBox" ratio="0.125,0,0.875,1" />

I had to do a simple calculation to make it work, but now it finds the correct AR every time in the Auto mode. Thanks a Bunch!

Edit: damn I type too slow! Ahh well...I'm not changin it

You can set up your own aspect ratios too, if you want, and jsut flip through them as needed. On my TV I have a "4:3", "4:3 -> 16:9" and "16:9 native". most of the time if I'm watching TV (most of the time), it's set to 4:3 -> 16:9 because most of the stuff I watch is broadcast as 4:3 but is boxed (i.e. filmed in highdef or widescreen but broadcast at 4:3).

GBPVR remembers the last setting it was on, too, so you dont have to change it unless you're watching something different form normal. The math for the ratios can be a bit tricky but once you get the hang of it, it's not bad.

Another note: Those letterbox bars that you see on DVD's are not actually there in the movies data. It's up to the decoder or DVD player to put them there. This can make things look distorted and wrong if you're not using a DVD specific decoder, or are watching a rip from your hdd. All kinds of wonky things can happen.
