Will try this later this week but wonder if sub can confirm the thinking behind this switch? I've a feeling it's something to do with needing a VM9 FSE screen refresh (and hence the need for a restart) so concerned this might break FSE for anyone, like me, using it?

2008-10-31, 02:36 AM (This post was last modified: 2008-10-31, 07:52 PM by eskimoquin.)
I recently started using VMR9 Fullscreen Exclusive mode (instead of VMR9 Custom) to resolve choppy video playback. Now that the video is usable (even the menu is smoother), I decided to leave PVRX2 running all the time instead of using MPC; however, after resume from standby (S3), I get the message mentioned in the first post:
"sorry this system does not support the required vmr9 video render".

I tried to edit config.xml as mentioned:
set:<RestartAfterPowerup>false</RestartAfterPowerup>
Still got the same error.

More testing showed that this setting resolves the issue when using VMR9 Custom, but not when using VMR9 FSE; I believe that VMR9 FSE ignores this setting and restarts regardless of it.

Most importantly, I realized that when I wake up the computer by WOL (my wireless keyboard can't wake it up yet), the screen is blank until I press a keyboard button. I also get the error when the computer wakes automatically for a recording because the screen is blank in that case too. If I press a button quickly after resume so the screen is not blank before PVRX2 restarts, I do NOT get the error. Additionally, if I wake the computer via the power button, the screen is not blank initially and I also do not get the error.

So, a couple fixes might be:
>wake the computer so the screen isn't blank when PVRX2 restarts
>>see: http://gbpvr.com/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/FAQ/B...aticWakeup
>make it so PVRX2 in VMR9 FSE obeys the RestartAfterPowerup setting
>>this probably isn't possible due to the nature of fullscreen exclusive mode

I don't think it's possible to avoid this error if the screen is blank when PVRX2 restarts. VMR9 needs a display to attach to, but the display is disabled when blank (something like that).

I'm going to start looking into that BlackScreenAfterAutomaticWakeup on the wiki. That's probably the best solution.

[Edit]:
Well that's unfortunate. It seems that gbpvrwake.exe + fullresume.exe doesn't wake the display quickly enough before PVRX2 restarts to avoid the error.

Maybe it is possible to get VMR9 FSE mode to obey the restarteafterpowerup tag. I'll try to get Subs attention on this.

Did you get anywhere with this? I'm getting the same problem. I'm using VMR9 FSE to get the best video - seems to avoid stuttering video (and sound) but occasionally (about 1 time in 10) when resuming from standby or hibernate I get the "sorry this system does not support the required VMR9 video renderer" message.

It's rather annoying, if the PC wakes to grab an EPG update at midnight, it doesn't go back to standby and just burns juice all night long!

If you post your logs, I'll take a look.

Log files from an instance of the renderer error occurring are attached. The PC was waking to grab and EPG at 3pm.

It seems that even if I don't get the error, the PC still does not sleep after grabbing the EPG. Maybe there is something I'm missing in the configuration?

@Sub
Can you verify if gbpvr is in VMR9 FSE mode that it does or does not obey the restarteafterpowerup tag? From my testing it does not and it will restart regardless. I have yet to upgrade to 1.3.7.

If you can get it to not restart when told not to, I believe that would resolve this issue. See my post #22 in this thread for more details.

From memory the app always restarts when returning from hibernate/standby when using the VMR9 FSE renderer.
