Is there a way to reduce my capture quality (and file sizes)?

I have set the capture settings as low as GB-PVR allows -- 320x240 resolution, 1500 bit rate. I would like to save storage space, and don't mind further reducing video quality, but no lower settings are available. Anything I can do? Thanks.

Your picture must look like crap. I think you should invest in a bigger hard drive.

Why don't use just transcode to xvid after recording - The qualit will be so much better.

What source are you using to capture?

Video source is analog cable via Hauppauge PVR-500 card. My video quality is poor regardless of capture settings, so I might as well save some space. Xvid does reduce file size nicely, but I need closed captions and they get lost when I transcode. Thanks for the suggestion.

You can extract the captions out using mpg2srt or ccextractor into an srt file. If the srt file name matches the transcoded xvid filename, you should be able to view the captions using the SRT viewer.

you might want to see why your video quality is so terrible.
Why don't you try and record something in 'normal' (good) quality and play it back with some other software - or burn to a DVD and see if the quality is still bad on a DVD player.
