MVP boot problem - stops at "Contacting Servers"

The only other thing I can think of to try (if you haven't already done so) is to power the MVP off at the mains for a 10 mins or so.

Nia,

1) You will need some sort of DHCP server on your network so the MVP can get an IP address. Your GB-PVR box must be on the same subnet as the addresses being dished out by DHCP. Since you have Server 2003, either that or a router will be your best bet (use one or the other, not both).

2) The Hauppauge MVP software does not need to be installed. But if it is, make sure the "MVPMedia" and "MVPMediaSvc" services are both stopped and set to Manual start or Disabled (not Auto). If the Hauppauge's MVP services are running, they will conflict with GB-PVR.

3) You do not need to have "GB-PVR MediaMVP Server" in your start up group. Just use config to auto-start 1 MVP server.

4) You don't need to disable the XP SP2 firewall. Add GB-PVR.exe as an exception.

If these tips don't solve the problem, post a few more details about your netwok setup.

What I tried to describe above was, that i tried at some point in the process to set up a Server2003 DHCP in stead of my normal setup with the router. It didn't make any difference.

Tried with and without the Hauppauge software installed and the services set to manual. As a side note starting the services immediately brought up the native Hauppauge UI.

3) You do not need to have "GB-PVR MediaMVP Server" in your start up group. Just use config to auto-start 1 MVP server.

I didn't to start with, but as you keep on struggling in vain you become desperate I now have it disabled only until I get something up.

Well - the network is really simple. A Linksys Wireless broadband router WRT54GS is DHCP server in a 192.168.1.x 255.255.255.0 setup. The GBPVR PC is manually set to IP 192.168.1.100 (XPSP2). I have an 8 port D-link switch, and have tried having the MVP and PC on both the switch and directly on the router .

Any other info i can give that could help?

This usually indicates a problem with DHCP or just the IP addressing in general. The Hauppauge software has a mini DHCP server built-in, which is why running their software often fixes issues like this. Here's a couple of things to try.

1) On your GB-PVR box, make sure Default Gateway & Primary DNS Server are both set to your router's internal IP address (probably 192.168.1.1?)

2) If that doesn't help, try temporarily switching your GB-PVR box from static IP to DHCP. This will at least help you verify that DHCP is working correctly. Make note of the whole configuration you receive (IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, Primary DNS Server, etc.) Everything but the IP address should be the same as what you originally had as a static config.

1) It was. Only diff. is that I had set my ISP's DNS directly.

2) Tried this. Didn't bring the GBPVR to life. Hauppague software (now running an earlier version 2.2.22146) still works as soon as the services are brought up. Verified the DHCP settings to match my manual settings.

Ok so your running SP2, and you ran the beta software from Hauppauge. When you went through that install and it said do you want to enable internet connection sharing did you click yes? To check, go into the windows firewall and make sure that you have 7 different port mapping entries. Also make sure that GBPVR.exe is listed as a exception in the firewall... This is what burned me for a while...

I do have the mappings and the exceptions in place, but even when disabling the firewall nothing goes.

I have tried without the Hauppauge software at all, with the beta version and the 'normal' version with the same lack of results.

I'm rapidly getting bald from tearing out my hair here

OK, in straw-clutching mode... Try copying the dongle.bin file from a Hauppauge installation that worked to your GB-PVR installation (I can't remember the exact locations, search your hard disk if you don't know either) and see if that makes a difference!

The suggestion you make is to ONLY install

1. Operating System (probably XP)
   
2. .NET framework
   
3. GBPVR 0.91.11
   

And NOT install my PVR 350 or any of the Hauppauge software initially?
