There are a lot more channels listed than I can see how do I access other channels eg sports?

If the scan didnt find channels you have listed in your epg, then its likely you either chose the wrong zip code or channel lineup for you area when you setup the epg, or if you using over-the-air ATSC they might be channels where the signal doesnt make it to your house, or if this was QAM digital cable these may be premium channels (encrypted and not accessable).

this is cable finstalled by my local supplier, Comcast. It look like I can also access some channels from the other suplier in the area AT&T. Is there any way to access encrypted channels? Any advice you can give me?

Is there any way to access encrypted channels?

The only way you can watch the encrypted channels is to use a set top box from you cable provider, with svideo/composite/rf connection to your video capture card. (or component video connection if you have a Hauppauge HD-PVR)
