Hi folks,

I just bought a cheap USB TV plug in (AFA9015), and it works great at picking up my digital channels. Catch is, it seems to only record in TS. Now I assume, since TS is MPEG it should be straight forward to convert across.

When I try and convert it to MPEG2 or XViD (so I can save some space), it fails. When I try and do it from the command line with FFMPEG I get a Sampling rate 0 is not allowed in MP2 Error.

I think it does the trick when I do -acodec copy, but it comes up loads of non-monotone timestamp errors.

Am I doing something stupid. I assume loads of others have solved this so was just looking for a way to convert the TS to MPG properly. My guess at the moment is that the problem with the TS is that it stores three audio streams, one of which is subtitles.

Any help would be great.

Firstly are you using full TS or just the TS mux in the gbpvr config?

Your using digital so I am suprised you cant record directly to mpg2 or DVR-ms. Have you tried ATI, cyberlink or microsoft dvr-ms demuxers from the misc tab in the config app?

Having asked those questions, I record in .TS (using the gbpvr ts mux not the full ts mux) and have no problems using ffmpeg to convert to mpg2. What ffmpeg command are you trying?

I think it is full TS. I think I may have figured out a bit of a work around, but not perfect.

There seemed to be quite a few errors in the TS file when I used TSDoctor. Catch is, I can't automatically fix TS files with TSDoctor - no commandline feature. I tried TS4NP and that crashed my computer. Am now using TSRemux, which seems to work.

The less than ideal situation is in postprocessing bat I am running TSRemux, then comskip, doing a ffmpeg convert to mpeg, which works fine after the TSremux. All in between renaming the files a few times. Haven't got it 100% yet.

As for recording options, my USB tuner (AFA9015) doesn't for some reason let me change how it is recorded (it was cheap so you get what you paid for). I will dig a bit more into the misc bit, and see if that answers.

HDTV to MPEG2 will convert ts files. Only tried it once just for laughs. Think it also converts to dvr-ms. It's free at least.

Bump. I record a lot of crummy ts files off comcast; I use HDTV to MPEG2 to simply recode them as ts so that they will play. I've tried ffmpeg, mencoder, TSRemux, TS Doctor, TS4NP - most of these won't even open the files. There's a command-line version I just came across, but haven't tried it yet. (Note in edit: the command-line code is old, and from another source?)

Have you tried Handbrake

http://handbrake.fr/

I capture ts files in H264/AC3 format and using normal conversion tools like x264 or even xvid converters, can have issues with audio/video sync. Handbrake reads the timestamps in the files and handles audio dropouts etc. and keeps the audio/video in sync

Can read a bunch of different input formats and outputs various formats

My less than ideal solution at the moment, as I want it all automated, rather than having to use a GUI to correct/convert from time to time.

I use the postprocessing bat, run TSRemux on all channels that are recorded using new USB AFA9015.

This gives me a file with a slightly different file name to %1, which I then rename.

Once that has happened I do a straight copy of the acodec and vcodec to MPG, and rename the files again, and allow the GBPVR post processing to convert to XViD.

Seems to be working for me at the moment. The solution for me is to figure out how to set the AFA9015 to record direct to MPG (which I can do through MediaPortal). I would rather put up with these minor hassles and stick with GBPVR.

Thanks for all the help and suggestion though.

try the cyberlink or ATI mpeg mux instead of the .ts mux. the recording format has nothing to do with the adapter itself, it's all about the mux you choose. The ati mux can be had with the AVIVO pack, I'm not sure where one gets the Cyberlink mux... there have been download links posted here and there.

you can also use the dvr-ms mux, which records in a microsoft-ized mpeg-2 format (or so I am led to understand)... there is an auto-convert option for that as well.

oh, also, in any case, you should not use the Full TS mux at all. That is only there for debug purposes, if you're having a problem sub will sometimes want a Full TS recording to look at.

You can find a selection of BDA mpeg muxers from this post:http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php?t=25630

Many users seem to have good results with the cyberlink 5.0.1307 version.

And there is the commandline version HandbrakeCLI which, although I haven't tried it, could fit your needs as part of a postprocessing.bat conversion process.

The GUI version works great for me.
