Vista updates cause LiveTV and Recordinf failiure

I also did something similar to MixMan today. I uninstalled a bunch of things without any luck. I finally used a restore point and everything started working again. I did verify that I have updates turned off, but when I looked at the windowsupdate.log, it showed that they did slip me a few updates anyway. Those updates do not show up in my Add/Remove programs as updates that I can remove.

I got annoyed and reformatted/reinstalled Vista and it's working again - although I've gone away for a week so wasn't able to test it much before leaving. I had been considering a reinstall for a while to clear out all the codecs so this was a good excuse. Although I'm worried that leaving auto updates on will cause it to go again....

Its definitely a worry. I'm not sure what I could have done to fix it though. It seemed whatever combination of things happened to cause this, would have broken any apps using .net remoting, which is pretty serious.

Its odd that its only affecting a very small number of people. I'm fully up to date with Vista patches and havnt seen any problems.

Assuming you've got a later .net runtime installed, I wonder if installing .net 2.0 runtime along side will help?

The other guys were on Vista, so I'm tempted to think your problem is something else. A firewall getting in the way will cause exactly the same symptoms.

I'll go ahead an mention that even though I have updates turned off on my Vista machine, Microsoft apparently forced the same one through again and broke my system again after a few days of working fine. I did a system restore again and am back up running. I'm going to try and watch some of the logs and see I can figure out which update is causing the problems.

That is really worrying - if turning updates off doesn't stop it and there's a chance that no matter how often we reinstall or rollback to a point it worked that MS can break it.... I went for a complete reinstall and hoped that turning updates off would stop the problem. I'll be bloody annoyed if I have to reinstall once a week! :mad:

I made one more change to my system and haven't seen the problem in a week. After the last system restore I did, I verified that Automatic updates was still off but, I noticed that even when you turn it off, Microsoft leaves the service running. I stopped and disabled the service and rebooted. It's been ~5 days since I did that I so far I am ok.

I am now pretty sure that Update KB937287 causes the problems.

This update can not be uninstalled. Only using a restore point will remove it.
This update should be installed before SP1. If Windows update want to install it after SP1 is istalled the Recording Service problems occur.
Many Vista users have had problems with programs after with this update.

This is what MS says about the 2 updated that should proceed SP1

KB937287 updates the Windows Vista “Servicing Stack.” Both updates (required before SP1 will be offered via Windows Update) are being made available now to reduce the number of reboots and make installation of the service pack easier.
KB938371 is a multi-component update that supports the successful install of SP1 and allows it to be uninstalled.

After having the problem happen to me a few times and having to restore, I made a fix that is holding.

I went into my hosts file and redirected any of the sites that I though it might get the update from (ex. windowsupdate.microsoft.com) and pointed them to 127.0.0.1. That way I can still use my network on the machine for EPG, EWA and other intranet items.
