Hard acceleration not working in GBPVR, but does outside of it

I've managed to do something really weird to my setup and I've almost fixed it without knowing how or what I did. Before Gazoo posted about the MPC codec I did some googling and came up with something like the "storm" codec pack (cant remember the exact name) which just caused PVRX2 to crash whenever I tried to show anything. I'd also tried to install bios updates from Gigabyte but the installer doesn't work with vista64, so no idea how I'm ever meant to update my bios. I did manage to update some of the ATI software but what with installing 8.6 from AMD/ATI I was annoyed it was all a mess and everything was broken. I removed the "vista/vista64" codec packs (including ffdshow) and the storm pack. I was then going to completely remove all ATI software and start again. But half way through I panicked and stopped the process. Oddly I no longer have the ATI MPEG decoder or CCC installed, but rather bizarely using the cyberlink decoders everything (SD and HD) plays almost perfectly. If HD gets stuttery, stop livetv and restart and all is well. Occasionally have to exit and restart pvrx2 and it typically plays perfectly for as long as I watch it.
So what was CCC doing that was causing my problems? I dont see how the loss of the ATI Mpeg decoder would solve my Cyblerlink HD playback problems. So I can only assume CCC was the culprite. Problem is now, how do I change resolution to other HDTV compliant ones? I want to see if 1080i or p works as I'm stuck in 720p without CCC to help.

This is puzzling to me as well. I would right click on the desktop, properties, settings tab, and mess with the resolution. It's not quite as granular as CCC though. Also, see what it does if you click advanced from that tab, do you get a catalyst tab?

Turns out you can change the resolution to a "TV" one in the display properties->advanced. Still get awful results with 1080i25 which is annoying as I'm sure that's what the BBC HD channel is broadcast in. But 720p is generally lovely. I sometimes need to change channel and back or even restart PVRX2 but it's the best I've ever had it and normally is perfect after doing a restart. Makes me wonder if there is something going on within PVRX2 that the restart cures... There's no hint of Catalyst though! There's an option under display properties->advanced (I think) that lists all the modes it can do and 720p50, 1080i25 and 1080p60 are all there. Amongst several others, but not 1080p50 which is a real shame.

I've had a problem getting hardware acceleration to work for h264 (freeview). Turned out I needed to apply this registry change for cl264dec and not clvsd as above:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cyberlink\Common\cl264dec\pvrx2

or

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cyberlink\Common\cl264dec\gbpvr

Thought I'd share this:

It took me all day but I've just managed to get hardware acceleration to work on a 1.7GHz Pentium M rig, 1GB RAM, XP Pro, PVRX2 v1.3.11, new fanless ATI 4650 (switched from an nVidia 7300LE without hw acceleration). It took a hunt for the Avivo decoder, getting that to work in PVRX2 -- once I realised I had to turn off ffdshow post-processing or the app just crashed instantly.

Now it works at around 25-30% CPU at 1080p25 with just a little tearing -- I'm sure some further tweaking could fix this -- although it would be nice if post-processing also worked, once I've upgraded to the mobo as I now realise I'll have to...(cost-effective recommendations gratefully accepted!).

Which video renderer are you using?
I assume not EVR?

I'm using EVR, yes. I found VMR resulted in higher CPU for no apparent gain. It was half-one in the morning when I quit, so I will have a look at it again some time today. Would Overlay be an improvement?

To answer my own question: it seems Overlay is an improvement. It's better but still not perfect. There's just a bit of tearing and very slight stutter especially on scenes with lots of movement...
