I now get sound with the video, and two tuners are working. Thanks to all for the help!

I happen to prefer the Microsoft DVR-MS mux, but just so you know, it's quite possible that what you've done is to change your recording mux until you've found one that you have a good playback decoder for. The other muxes may have recorded just fine, with your problem being in the playback of the recordings, not in the recording itself.

I use DVR-MS because it works best with comskip. If you don't need or want comskip, TS Mux has several advantages (Multirecord being the main one).

I don't think there was ever a combo I could get to work with TS Mux, or any of the others. When you say Multirecord is an advantage, what do you mean by that? I did a test where I was recording two programs at a time. The only problem I had was one very momentary glitch on the program being recorded when the 2nd recording started. After that, smooth as silk. But being a bit of a perfectionist on this issue, I'd love to be able to eliminate that. Right now, my OS and storage folder are on the same HDD. I'm planning to add a 1 TB drive that will be the storage drive seperate from my OS drive. I'm hoping that will eliminate that issue.

But I'm also very interested in getting comskip to work.

Don't worry about Multirecord - like me, you're tuning ATSC (probably the exact same channels as me as I'm in so cal also). Multirecord is of very limited use, unless you record a LOT of PBS. Multirecord simply lets you record any or all of the sub-channels on one frequency at the same time using one tuner... such as 50.1, 50.2, 50.3 and 50.4. But few of the channels have any useful sub-channels; 4.4 Universal Sports is great to watch, but I never record it; 5.2 ThisTV is cool, but I don't think I've ever needed to record 5.1 and 5.2 at the same time; and so on... I've thus far never encountered a recording conflict that could have been resolved with multi-record. So I've just left it off.

In fact, I keep thinking of switching to DVR-MS myself, as comskip reportedly works MUCH better with DVR-MS. I found it too hit-and-miss with .ts, so I've had it disabled for months. The only thing stopping me so far is the general fact that I have gb-pvr working pretty well as is, the family uses it every day, so I don't really want to go messing around with it.

My experience is that comskip is unusable with .ts and works perfectly with dvr-ms. Despite the fact that I've had comskip installed for more than a year, it is extremely common for the wife to comment on how wonderfully accurate it is in locating commercials.

I agree with you that multirecord is of only limited value - I only had one or two occasions when I used it (before the significant other's complaints about how I'd screwed up comskip drove me back to dvr-ms). If you really need multirecord, you probably need another tuner.

It really depends on your source. Not so useful for ATSC, but very useful for QAM or DVB-T/S.

Yes - not quite as useful as another tuner, but a heck of a lot cheaper Smile

It depends on your broadcasts. Multi-record can be more useful than an extra tuner in lots of places, or even better when combined with an extra tuner. In DVB countries, then often squeeze all the channels into a small number of frequencies.

With two tuners, and multi-recording, you could be recording 16 channels. Admittedly half of those channels would be of no interest, but a lot of them would be. For example, in the UK with the BBC channels all being on the same mux, or in NZ with all the TVNZ channels on single mux and all the Canwest channels being on a single mux.

The 8 or so top NZ channels can be recorded simultaneously with two tuners.

I have cable and have set up my digital tuners for QAM, although i have 4 tuners, it allows me to record 12 channels at once, now i have never needed to record 12 channels, but i'll never have to worry about a conflic again until more useful channels are added to QAM fre and clear

yes, it should be made clear that any comments here by me and Dennit about Multi-record being of limited value apply strictly to OTA ATSC. It's quite a marvelous bit for those on QAM and the various DVB sources around the world.
