Hi all, newb, so please bear with me.

I have a Hauppauge HVR 850 USB HDTV adapter plugged into a desktop running Vistax32. GB-PVR installed fine, but my question is this: is my particular device supported? I follow the super easy instructions, and my DEVICE TYPE is listed in the DIGITAL SOURCE CONFIGURATION, when I select it manually. If I select SHOW ONLY DETECTED DEVICES, only Hauppauge -HVR950Q and HVR950Q(QAM) pop up. So I uncheck that box and pick the correct 850 model, follow the other instructions(Schedulesdirect for EPG), and get:

YOUR EPG SOURCE DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE CONFIGURED CORRECTLY. PLEASE CHECK BLAH BLAH, random(to me) words and numbers follow after that. Everything on my screen looks as it does on the tutorial file.

The ugly Haup software works and the tuner is fine, so I know Im just missing something dumb, sorry. Trying to get it myself though, a little more info on my hunt:

my pc:
.net Framework: 3.5
microsoft installer: dont know. downloading 4.5 now.
visual c runtime support: yes
directx and windows media player: 10

Thought Id found an plan b in XMLTV, but it seems like EVERY guide for it is made for experts. Anyone have a tip or trick for me to get this awesome stuff working? Or maybe a TRUE XMLtv (or alternative) tutorial for people who are used to installation wizards? Thanks much, in advance. Ive been at this for 5 hours straight. RC

My 850 shows up as a 950Q, this is due to a change in the drivers.

For the EPG, your best bet is to use Schedules Direct. Yes, it does cost $20 per year, but there is a 7-day free trial available. GB-PVR has explicit support for Schedules Direct, so the setup is pretty easy.

edit: oh, I didn't read carefully enough, you were already using schedules direct. Have you gone to their site, created an account and selected a channel lineup?

go into config, make sure your schedules direct info is correct, hit Update EPG. If it doesn't update, then exit and post your config and config-native logs.

Went to the Schedules Direct site to check their forumns, and it said that some of their stuff was screwed up. Sometimes you have to reset passwords and recreate lineups. Did both andthe programs setting up the channels right now. Thanks again Johnsonx42.

@sub:

as the HVR-850 has changed, either in hardware or drivers so that it now has the same filter names as the HVR-950Q (but AFAIK still doesn't support QAM), is it worth having a second entry in the BDA.ini for it or do we just accept the logic that we use the HVR-950Q entry for the HVR-850?

Selecting either would be fine.

I never remove or renamed devices in the bda.ini file, since this can cause problems for people when they upgrade and then try to change settings in their capture source.

What I mean to say is that the HVR-850 entry no longer works for current HVR-850's... you have to select the HVR-950Q entry. You definitely can't change the existing HVR-850 entry, I know that... but do you want a new entry for the HVR-850, such as:

[Hauppauge HVR-850 (new)]
TUNING_TYPE=ATSC
FILTER_TUNER=WinTV HVR-950 BDA Tuner
FILTER_CAPTURE=WinTV HVR-950 BDA Capture
PIN_TUNER_IN=Input0
PIN_TUNER_OUT=MPEG2 Transport
PIN_CAPTURE_IN=MPEG2 Transport
PIN_CAPTURE_OUT=MPEG2 Transport

This would avoid confusion for new users such as log3an
