GBPVR - Remote Desktop

Hello,

I am having trouble with my computer crashing when accessing GBPVR 09112b through remote desktop. My GBPVR machine crashes when I access manual record option and start to put in the time to record. I replaced my MB and Processor and did a fresh install of XP and GBPVR. I didn't have this problem previous to that. I can also access all other processor extensive applications fine without incident. Does anybody have any suggestions?
ffdshow processing is off, Overlay is set.

Instead of remote desktop and running the application, why not use the web admin to control the scheduler? Browse to the machine's address with

http://[your IP address]:7647/gbpvr/login.aspx

If you're on the LAN, then the address is the actual IP address of the machine running the recording service. If you're trying to do it from outside the network, then you need to open port 7647 through your router to your machine and go to your router's public WAN address (the address your ISP gives you).

As to your actual question, it would help if you defined "crash" (does it freeze, reboot, show an error?), and defined "that" (as in "no problems previous to that"). :confused: Also, your question implies that it does not do this if you're actually at the computer, rather than using Remote Desktop. Is that the case?

My computer shuts off and reboots, just like unplugging the thing. I'm trying out your idea on the link now. Previous to that means my previous MB & Processor. Everything works fine when I'm actually at the machine.

I just tried using remote desktop on mine to add a manual recording, which I've never done before, and it worked fine. I now withdraw, and leave this to others more knowledgable in the inner workings of the program.

I thought maybe I could help with a network problem, but something else is going on. Sub or somebody will want to see if anything is logged by GBPVR, so have a look at the log files.

Was the MB and processor a replacement with identical parts for warranty repair or something, or an upgrade? From your parts list, you should have plenty of machine to run it. Make sure you have the latest and greatest drivers and BIOS for the board, that's all I can think of for now.

If all you're doing is scheduling an event, you'll want to be using the web interface anyway, rather than Remote Desktop, so this may be moot.

You could also try using TightVNC or some other software to control your desktop.

For what it's worth, I remote desktop into my GB-PVR box all the time and have never had it crash -- even the few times I accidentally hit "live TV" -- all I had to do was hit escape and wait and it would always come back.

While the web interface is there and it is very handy, once in a while, when a recording is slightly unusual or you need to schedule a manual recording, having access to the desktop is quite handy.

But is nowhere near as good as remote desktop for most cases. I agree that UltraVNC is good, but would use RD over it if i had the choice.

I would check your video drivers. When you connect with remote desktop, windows actually flips to using a different video driver for your particular session. This could possibly be conflicting with the video driver you have installed. It would make sense if you somehow installed a slightly different version of the driver after your hardware upgrade.

I guess it's your perspective. I think RD is the same, except that it forces you to follow Windows rules, like logging you out when you disconnect. It was that reason I left RD to find a vnc in the first place.

Being able to connect to my TV in DC from Austin over a dialup w/ no lag at all, and the full desktop w/ no visuals disable pretty much sold me for life.

Just to ask, how is RD superior? Maybe I wasn't utilizing it as you are, and I'd like to know what it may be handier for outside VNC. It's not like I have a ban on RD, so I'd use it for what VNC doesn't do.

The one BIG advantage I see to using remote desktop is security. It is inherently encrypted, from connection to disconnection. Also, when remote controlling a machine, that machine's monitor is sitting at the welcome screen (or login prompt) so no one can see what you're doing. With Windows Server (or a small hack to XP Pro) you can have MULTIPLE remote desktop sessions logged in at once and working simultaneously. My wife and I remote desktop the same box from work on different accounts at the same time and it's really handy.

I also like the drive mapping (although it's slow), resolution choices from the client side, and system key pass through (ALT+TAB, etc), sounds can be brought from the server machine and even printers and serial ports can be mapped (that's cool too).

Yes, there are some implementations of VNC that will do some of the features above, I just prefer RD. I do a lot of systems administration work and it's just better to be built into the OS itself in my opinion.

Don't get me wrong, I use VNC, but only on machines that don't have Remote Desktop, or when I need someone to watch what I'm doing.
