I'm interested by your post as you seem to have similar issues to me before I updated the SATA driver. It did seem to be watching the in progress HD recording more than the ongoing recordings themselves that caused my issues. I've got an HD4650 though so I don't believe it's lacking in power. Likewise the CPU is always dead low so it's not that. The memory is dual channel and I'm sure not the bottleneck. Since upgrading the SATA driver and then upgrading to win7 it's not had the same issue, but it also coincided with some awful weather and crappy signal so I knew that was causing problems. Now I've upgraded to win7 the weather is fine but I have noticed sometimes watching an in progress recording that the sound will go and the video will skip. Pressing pause/resume clears it and it's fine. I never had this on Vista!

Hold the phone. This seems to blow the hardware theory out of the water.

I just started three recordings at once (1080i, 720p and 576i). I then exited PVRx2, and began playing three different 1080i recordings in three different players (WMP, MPC and VLC). The players struggled as you might expect (VLC looked great), but they played their content.

I stopped the players and went back to PVRx2 to check the recordings. All three recordings were perfect; they did not suffer at all during that playback.

Then, I played a single 1080i recording with the PVRx2 player. All three recordings began to suffer at exactly the point that I started that playback. (Mostly, there are long pauses of a second or more coded directly into the recording).

This seems to indicate that it is not a video hardware problem at all, as surely it would be equally stressed by the other players. However, it only arose for the first time when I did the installations described in this thread.

I am baffled. I will try it now without the FSE renderer.

Yes...I do intend to update the SATA drivers as "another project," but I've reasoned that I need to deal with this separately.

Even though I could not see a connection to codecs with this problem, I took a chance that there may be some subtlety at work that I don't understand. I emailed Hoborg to unlock the SAF, and have now installed it twice with the key activated. Now, my GBPVR Video Decoder choices are only Intervideo and ffdshow. They both produce terrible results, there is no Cyberlink option as recommended, and even the decoders I was using are gone. Please help!

what you post in #53 indicates that this is is a decoder problem. i.e. gbpvr is using a different decoder to VLC( which uses build in decoders) and WMP.

SAF provides a graphedit program that allows you to open lastgraph.grf to see what decoders it was using to playback. Might be worth posting a small jpeg screenshot.

There must have been a problem with your SAF installation else you would see cyberlink decoder available. Upload the SAF logs in c:\ for someone (well let;s be honest, hoborg) to take a look.

btw: there is a prgram called crapcleaner that is good for removing old drivers and stuff. I have used it to good effect in the past but would add the caveat that you should have a full system backup before using it.

I can't believe this all started with a slightly blurry image. Please, God, bring back the blurry image! I'll never complain again!!

I have now, in desperation, installed a whole new video card. After a struggle with the onboard graphics adapter (while working blind), I managed to install the unit and run through an hour or so of ATI installation, including Catalyst Control Centre. After rebooting, though, it will not start, so I can't configure my system. I have watched the task manager while I try to start it manually; the MOM.exe and CCC.exe processes both appear for about 15 seconds, then simply unload again.

I tried to deal with this by using ATI's catch-all "uninstall everything" program, rebooting and running the installation CD from scratch. I made the mistake of leaving the room while it was running, and I came back 20 minutes ago. It has been telling me since then that there is 17 seconds remaining in the Avivo installation. I have no idea what else has or hasn't installed.

Please, everyone; I know you have offered me a lot of advice already, but I am at my wits end after three nearly-sleepless nights. I'm surprised ATI doesn't get sued more often for emotional damages.

After a third attempt to remove and reinstall the ATI software, the screen came up black. Not blank; black. I could hear the HDMI audio, and the TV's screen saver did not activate. I tried plugging into the VGA port, but that is disabled with HDMI active. Finally, I had no choice but to force a power-down and try to enter safe mode (a ridiculous but necessary concept).

Sadly, the forced power-down corrupted some critical system files. I can no longer boot; not even into so-called "safe mode". I am now attempting to use the recovery console, but it appears to hang when I choose a windows installation to log onto. I guess that is the first problem to solve; how do I copy back corrupt files without the recovery console?

Remember how I didn't want to risk installing a new video card? I'm not saying that wasn't good advice, but this always seems to be the result.

I'd say look at ditching the motherboard, as that could be a common point of problems for all of your issues.
I can't say I have ever had anywhere near as many issues as you, and I've changed multiple video cards, motherboards, ram, & tuner cards all within my HTPC.
........Or just get a Tivo / consumer DVB-T recorder.


For the boot problem, what files are erroring?
You could look at something like Hirens Boot CD to use some of their recovery tools to fix the HDD.
