BigMoose, when you can spare five minutes, can you please visith this thread http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php...post361211 to give me more advice about the improvements to your SATA drives?

As I said, I'm not ignoring the advice to reinstall...I'm gathering assets and planning the reinstall. It's difficult to explain why a reinstall would be so much more difficult than average for me to get right, but I really can't just jump into it. I am planning to post a thread soon about live online TV streaming, so that might explain some of it.

My plan is to install everything I need or want, and get it working to the best of my ability on my existing system. I am keeping records and copies of configuration files as I go, from which I will create a "patch" CD to supplement my Windows installer. In addition, I will install a new drive that I can select from a boot menu, so that I have the option of continuing to boot to my current configuration until I get a smoothly-running new system.

Longer term, I will use the existing drive as a "ghost" of my system. Whenever I want to install something new, I will switch to the older drive and make all my mistakes there before performing a single installation on the new drive.

Anyway, Hoborg identified one of the filters that I can't give up as interfering with the SAF, so a reinstall would not help that particular case (but will likely calm down many of my other problems).

the problem with your theory is that your system is so messed up your not getting good results
so when you try something (ie saf) it doesnt work then you go back around in circles

believe me i know ive been there its way better to start on a fresh install then try different things you are wasting your time doing this way

ive been holding off saying anything but i couldnt keep quiet any longer Smile

It seems to me you did say something...Look, Hoborg told me to remove a decoder that my auxilliary software requires. SAF will therefore not work for me regardless. Why is it so outrageous to think that the SAF may not suit every single system in the universe? Just because it is "excellent" doesn't mean that it is "perfect"...and if the system were really the problem, then the codecs I have now wouldn't work, either (which they do).

If you had prepared the number of batch files, scripts and programs to make your HTPC do the bizarre things I have mine doing, you would share my reluctance to "just reinstall". Having said that, I have already preordered my parts from Umart when they reopen on 5-January. Welcome to Australia.

A couple more things to note is Australia is pal not ntsc so what works in the Usa doesnt work in Australia for smooth video

as for saf i know what your saying i was more just using it as an example of just throwing different things at your pc and expecting it to work
the more stuff you load then unload the more the registry etc gets screwed over the worse the pc runs

Ive been down the path of ATI drivers they seem to be worse to correct once they dont load right they just dont seem to uninstall cleanly enough which screws up the next one you try

It doesnt really worry me if you reload im just trying to offer you a bit of advice that will make your life a little easier

i never reload a system back on the same harddrive i just buy new ones that way all my little mods are still there for me to go back and look at
hard drives are so cheap you dont need a big one because it should only have the operating system on it for speed
buy big secondary hard drives and the fastest small one for your operating system
all recording including live TV should be done onto a seperate physical drive( not a secondary partition )

Good Luck i know whats its like when you cant get the video smooth as you want

I hope you can all appreciate the irony in this. I finally caved to the pressure to "reload now", and went out and bought a small SATA drive onto which to install my fresh, new system. I was going to continue using my original drive to watch TV, but work with the new one until I had it right. However, when I pulled out the original drive to make room for the new one, I broke off a pin. I'm pretty sure that's the first time that's ever happened to me.

That's it, folks. Game over.

Or, maybe not quite: I did make a full backup of my system drive first (thank goodness). However, because some genius at Microsoft decided that you need a floppy disk drive (a FLOPPY disk drive? who the HELL has one of those?) to create a true, bootable backup, I didn't do so; I just chose the "let me choose what to back up", and chose most of Drive C. I'm pretty sure, sadly, that this means I will not be able to quickly "ghost" back my drivers and whatnot...unless someone can think of a solution...which means I really am starting from scratch, and with nothing.

So...do we all get the irony?

And to think that all I wanted was to install my second video card.

Had the same thing happen to me a while back on an IDE drive.
I hacked it to get all of my data off by using 2 aligator clips, sewing needles and a length of hookup wire.

Put a needle where the pin should be, aligator clips joined together with wire then a pin through the ribbon cable at the appropriate location.
Would only work in Master with no slave attached, but my ugly solution got the data off the drive. Smile
