Idiot question here (MVP & NMT tab)

Handy to know, i have also sent an email to Hauppauge to ask about there new hardware for HD MVP and the HDPVR support as it doesnt use the MPEG2 format.

There is a new Hauppauge MediaMVP-HD in the works, which will hopefully see the light of day eventually (I have one on my desk), but be warned its more like NMT than the MVP, and the GB-PVR UI wont work on it for a while. Eitherway, it'd most likely be the same, ie booting to its own user interface and having to select a menu option to start GB-PVR interface.

When contemplating an NMT - the worst thing you can do is read the posts in the forum.

Without one in your hands or in front of you the posts only add confusion.
Setting one up to an existing GBPVR system (of recent release and patch levels) is a simple task that 10 minutes would be a generous quantity of time to do.

As i said easrlier, i have no issue with loading software, however standardisation is the key here, power on and it works is the result (as with MVP).

My main aim is to not have multiple copies of GBPVR floating around (read that to mean small media boxes running there own GBPVR pulling the database from another box which was the server but now the recording device, this creates a mega headache in upgrading as they all need to be done rather than 1 server with terminals pulling the menus), having one media server is enough, it works well with MVP meaning any new hardware should work with the same format (true server / terminal).

The NMT does appear to work as a terminal to an existing gbpvr server.
With the MVP's did you stick with the hauppauge dongle or did you ever upgrade to mvpmc on it? - If so, then the NMT works in a similar fashion.
The differences are that the MVP needed a dongle to work and the NMT is a standalone device which needs to load the mvpmcx2 file to "emulate an MVP"

Martin has even has a tweak to permit use of a Hauppauge remote with the NMT so it appears even more like one. I'd never go back to an MVP now.

The NMT is exactly the same as MVP in this regard, there is a small dumb client process that runs locally on the device, sending key stokes to the server, and receiving screens to display. There is no local GBPVR installation or anything like that. Its just the same as the MVP.

With the MVP that client process is a executable hidden inside dongle.bin. With the NMT that client process is mvpmcx2.

I would just like to add that you can set up your NMT device to load into GBPVR automatically. Instructions are in the Wiki.

You should also consider the egreat 34a. They sell for about $140.

Ive had a response from Hauppauge, they are saying 6 weeks (about mid to end of February) and it supports the HDPVR stuff as well.

So, should i wait for the new MVP or attempt to dig in to the NMT arena, i dont like waiting for new hardware for 2 reasons normally, 1 they never arrive on time and 2 really expensive for the first 6 months as no one can get one...

Nope, i did a "not broke dont fix it" thing, was standard dongle all the way...
