When you load the show time listings in the XML file do you replace all show times with the new list or do you just add new shows? Some of the current shows do not seem to be getting updated.

If I delete my Capture Sources will it delete all the channels? and if the Channels are deleted does it also delete the Recurring and Pending Recordings (the list of shows that I have told it to record)? I want to keep the Recurring and Pending Recordings but delete and recreate the capture source info. Is this possible?

what causes previous episodes that have been recorded and viewed to be recorded again?

It depends.

The automated nighly update (or the 'update epg' button the 'System' screen) will delete the existing listings (and any season recording episodes), then import the new listings (and recreate any season recording episodes).

The 'update epg' button in the capture source doesnt delete the existing listings - it simply loads the new listings and inserts them.

Yes and yes.

Not directly. You can import the recording-dump.xml, and it'll try to recreate your recurring recordings, but it'll only work if the channel names are exactly the same.

There are very EPG sources that identify one airing of a show is the same as some other airing at a different time, so usually all episodes are considered to be new.

The exception is 'Schedules Direct', with the 'dont record duplicates' option. In this case, the EPG provides show identifiers that the application can use to know two shows are the same, and it can avoid recording the same shows over and over.

Apprecaite the insight.

So the shows supposed unique identifier is not that unique then to prevent the shows from being re-recorded? Do you know if that is assigned by the show or the station?

What utility do you use to load the recordings-dump.xml back into the db? and which tables does it populate?

Lastly, what do the different STATUSes and RECORDING_TYPEs mean in RECORDING_SCHEDULE table?

If you're using xmltv, then your epg source is most likely not supplying any unique show identifier information, and every show is assumed to be a new. When these unique show identifers are available, then the app will use it to prevent shows being re-recorded (if you have 'dont record duplicates' enabled).

As I mentioned though, it's pretty much only Schedules Direct that is supplying this info. Xmltv files can supply this, but I think only the Schedules Direct xmltv grabber does.

I think the unique show identifiers supplied by SchedulesDirect are created by Tribune Media Systems, who supply the data to Schedules Direct.

You just need the 'import recordings' button in the config app.

I dont really have the time to describe these internals, and they're changing for the next release, so probably not worth worrying about.

If you have the "Don't Record Duplicates" option enabled, and you are in fact getting episode ID's from your listing provider, I believe you may be seeing the same problem I have (desctribed here: http://forums.gbpvr.com//showthread.php?41640). Everything I've seen leads me to conclude there's a flaw in the "Don't Record Duplicates" logic that prevents the EPG data from updating the way sub describes. In short, any show scheduled to record becomes effectively locked in place the moment it is scheduled; no later update to time, date or content will be accepted.
I gather sub has not been able to reproduce or fix this, but I'm holding out hope that the changes in the scheduler for the next version sub has alluded to will also fix this issue (or alternately if it's not fixed, after the major release perhaps sub will have time to look at this issue again).
