NPVR 1.5.33 works great with my EG-M34A as a front-end. Schedules and plays recorded TV with no problems (both newer TS files and old MPG files), and can play music and pictures from a shared drive with no problems. But, when I attempt to play MPG files from any non-NPVR source, NPVR crashes (more specifically, I think it's mvpmcx2 that crashes) and I get returned to the EG-M34A homepage.

These files play fine from NPVR on a PC, and also from the native EG-M34A UI.

I've tried various combinations of settings on the Decoder screen, including changing the Video Renderer and the video decoders, without success.

Logs don't show anything at all.

Any idea what could be happening, or how to further troubleshoot?

thanks!!

It never hurts to upload the logs. My first guess is your files are on a share and there is a permission error, meaning you either need to run the NPVR Recording service as a user or use the Sharehelper utility.

Martin, thanks for your reply - you are correct that these files are on a share. This same share was in use back in the MVP days, and worked fine. I verified that the NPVR service is running as a user (my account, which has full permissions everywhere). Note that I could *see* the files from the NMT, just not play them - with previous share-permission problems I could not even see the files.

But, these are the only files on a share, so clearly you're right that the problem may lie there somewhere. I copied a sample MPG file from the share to a local directory, and it played fine from the NMT, so the issue was definitely share-related, somehow.

Then, I saw Sub's message that 1.5.36 was available, and could not resist installing that to see if it fixed my problem. I thought, but was not certain, that these files had previously worked on NPVR, but might have been an earlier version than 1.5.33. Well, 1.5.36 works!

No idea what may have changed, but I'm back in business....

Good news, there is a lot of stuff cleaned up in 1.5.36 and I did forget that there was a patch to 1.5.33 needed to play from a share. Your logs would have identified this too.

Well, here are the logs. I sure couldn't find anything useful in there. They were captured after re-starting the NPVR service. First I played a file from a local directory, which shows plainly enough in the logs. Then, when I played the file from the network share, nothing. I can see no indication that the file was even attempted, let alone that it came from a network share.

The info could have been in a .1,.2 or .3 file

Honestly, there's nothing there! The .1, .2 and .3 files are just older versions of the .log files, right? Is there a setting anywhere to increase the logging level?

I have noticed far more info in the logs since installing 1.5.36, wonder if I had a version of 1.5.33 with logging turned down low...
