Contemplating expanding to HDHR Prime with cable card...as my provider charges the same for my cable service and what Cox says "Advanced TV" -- which turns on 200 more channels or so (mostly junk but that is a different problem).

Currently I am doing just ClearQAM on a handful of channels. But it works well.

I have read that only Microsoft MC does DRM "right" and can playback these copy-once channels -- even through extender like Xbox.

Question: Is it a technical possibility, with development effort, that NPVR can handle such files in a similar fashion, through MVPMCX2 or native on the PCH? Or is this stuff so locked down by a combination of what the tuner lays in the stream and what is needed on the media center side-- that no chance exists for this to ever work with NPVR?

Thanks for your help and ideas. My goal would be to continue to use WinXP/NPVR unchanged on my little low-power Atom based machine with NMT as playback device. Otherwise I would need Windows 7, bigger/faster PC.....and buy another Xbox Extender.... all things I prefer not to do...and will put off if I can.

Any other advice appreciated. Thanks for educating me on this.

I'm just watching SiliconDust's project connect. Phase 2 has to do with recording. Perhaps the prime will stream an encrypted file to a server to be stored and then the server would pump it through the prime on it's way back to a DTCP-IP playback device like a PS3 at a later time.

The NMT client is not locked down by the limits of the PC client, but unfortunately the DRM that the Sigma chip supports does not include PlayReady. At a technical level the Sigma chips do support various end-to-end encryption schemes and they are used in some cable and satellite systems but I don't know any Sigma chips that are PlayReady so you will need a proprietary system with xboxes, Echoes or Joey's TiVOs or the cableco's own solution.

Thanks Martin...all...and reposting of this other thread. It is all clearer to me now, and stuff I was afraid was true -- and now understand better. That means less is more for me, for now -- I like my setup today. I will make the move off NPVR to WMC if I lose my current QAM channels I have today if Cox decides to encrypt everything (as apparently the FCC has allowed them to do now). Then buy another Xbox or other proprietary extender to enable the 200 extra digital channels of mostly junk. It seems inevitable though.
